JOB TITLE: Young Adult Diversion Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Chief of District Courts

COMPENSATION: $60,000 – $75,000; commensurate with experience

POSITION PROFILE:

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office (SCDAO) is seeking a full-time coordinator for our newly launched Young Adult Diversion Program. The Young Adult Diversion Program is an alternative to traditional prosecution available to young adults ages 18 – 25 who are in need of community support. The program uses a multi-system restorative justice approach, utilizing community organizations, to assist SCDAO’s diversion efforts by meeting the needs of eligible young adults. The program incorporates four phases of treatment and participants must meet set benchmarks to advance to the next phase. Participants will engage in the program for 12-18 months and upon completion, graduate from the program.

The coordinator will provide comprehensive case management including conducting an initial intake, creating an individualized service plan, referring the program participant to appropriate community- based partners for services to address needs, implementing and monitoring the service plan, and conducting reassessments and regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the service plan. The coordinator will work with the YAD team, which is a collaboration of community partners dedicated to helping the participants achieve milestone accomplishments on their way to graduation. The position is designed to hold program participants accountable through supervision, referrals to community resources, and adhering to the practice of restorative justice principles.

The coordinator will assist in developing and strengthening partnerships with community organizations and should have experience with young adult serving programs in Suffolk County as well as experience working with a diverse population of at-risk young adults.

Per SCDAO’s vaccine mandate, as a condition of employment, successful applicants will be required to have received COVID-19 vaccination or an approved exemption as of their start date. Details on demonstrating compliance with this requirement will be provided to applicants selected for employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend court as needed to meet with the young adult, their supports, and attorney.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with SCDAO point prosecutor.
  • Work and communicate effectively with law enforcement, court personnel, probation, community partners, and defense attorneys.
  • Schedule appointments program participant to conduct intake, assessment, and screening.
  • Follow-up with program participant on a consistent and ongoing basis until diversionary period is complete.
  • Develop individualized service plans and participants to appropriate community resources.
  • Advocate with collateral contacts to provide quality case management and integrated care.
  • Work with Victim Witness Advocates to ensure that any victims have a voice during all phases of the diversion process.
  • Maintaining a high volume of documentation for each caseload, accurately, detailed, and timely
  • Attend meetings as they relate to services, monitoring, and compliance.
  • Identify, assess, select, develop, and maintain referral partnership relationships with local service resource agencies that effectively assist YAD participants to achieve their opportunities and objectives in life.
  • Attend various community meetings.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community partners and young adult serving organizations.
  • Assist in the collecting and compiling of statistics and the ongoing evaluation of YAD.
  • Coordinating schedules with community partners and each service provider (CLBB, Harvard St Neighborhood Health, MTW, ROCA)
  • Track deliverables and comply with reporting requirements for grant awards.
  • Complete timely referral to appropriate resources for applicants not selected for participation in the program.
  • Presenting case updates to CPCS and Trial Court judge overseeing the case

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Attend required training and other trainings relevant to office functions.
  • Become familiar with and follow the provisions of the Office Personnel Policies, particularly with regard to confidentiality, sexual harassment, drug-free workplace, and the usage of information technology resources.
  • Exercise respectful and professional behavior and communication with the public, judicial and law enforcement personnel, and office staff.
  • Complete work assignments in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Able to run and attend meetings and court hearings virtually.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: N/A

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Be able to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time.

TRAVEL: Travel expected within Suffolk County courts, law enforcement offices, and community facilities.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Work, Psychology or related field or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of at-risk, system-involved young adults, child welfare, behavior health, or related field.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems and thrive in a high stress environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree with a focus in social work, psychology, criminology, or criminal justice.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with diverse populations of at-risk, system- involved youth in the juvenile justice, child welfare, behavior health or related field.
  • Proficiency in a second language, such as Spanish, Haitian Creole or Cape Verdean Creole.
  • Familiarity with young adult serving organizations in Suffolk County.
  • Prior experience with the use of risk/needs assessment tools (training will be provided as to the specific tools used).
