POSITION SUMMARY
Americans for the Arts is seeking a skilled Webmaster to ensure websites and servers meet user requirements. Responsibilities include enhancing user experience by creating user-friendly, visually appealing, and secure sites. Attention to detail and effective communication are essential to balancing creativity and analytical thinking. A strong technical background is highly valued. The ultimate goal is to guarantee the seamless functionality and efficiency of Americans for the Arts’ web infrastructure.
The Webmaster position is responsible for the development, maintenance, and upkeep of Americans for the Arts websites and web-based services. The Webmaster will use their knowledge of front-end web languages and Drupal CMS to collaborate with staff to plan, design, and create new pages, tools, and features that meet the needs of the organization. The Webmaster will regularly moderate staff edits to all web content to ensure that it meets the organization’s branding and design standards and that it is accessible per the standards of Section 508 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The Webmaster will also regularly interface with external constituents for site maintenance, larger website projects, or web-based services handled outside the organization’s Drupal websites. The Webmaster reports to the Vice President of Strategic Communications & Innovation and collaborates closely with the Strategic Communications team and across other organizational teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Utilize advanced HTML and CSS skills (and knowledge of SQL, JavaScript, and PHP) to develop new web pages and features. This includes writing properly formatted HTML, customizing styling, and updating complex stylesheets, building web forms, and troubleshooting issues to determine practical solutions.
- Work closely with the Vice President of Strategic Communications (Creative Director) for approval and with the Digital Marketing and Social Media Manager for consistency across all digital platforms/channels.
- Daily, review, correct, and approve staff-submitted content for the organization’s websites and respond to web related help desk tickets.
- Ensure all new content and updates meet the organization’s accessibility standards and the standards laid out in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
- Configure and customize Americans for the Arts Drupal-based websites to create new blocks, feeds, content types, and other features, as needed.
- Maintain and monitor Google Analytics accounts, regularly analyze site statistics, user traffic, and behavior of projects and website to provide updates through weekly reports.
- Coordinate website needs for annual, time-sensitive events and programs to ensure fresh content and meet deadlines.
- Research best practices and trends for website development, learn new languages, libraries, and frameworks, and apply new solutions to tackle project assignments and to help our sites grow and improve.
- Create simple graphics and images utilizing the Adobe Creative Suite of programs for web pages, as required.
- Assist in the ideation and creation of wireframes and mockups for new web projects to present the intended user experience to program staff and external developers, when applicable.
- Apply knowledge of information architecture, engaging web content, and project management to assist in defining strategic online plans and campaigns.
- Interface with vendors to meet requirements, milestones, and deadlines for larger, externally developed web projects and address and troubleshoot server issues and other technical problems.
- Serve as a point of contact for routine website projects. Collect requirements from staff, guide them through web team procedures, and ensure that requirements are met and achieved in line with the decided-upon deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position meets the following work history and experiences requirements:
- A creative self-motivated organized, problem-solver, with analytical and troubleshooting abilities who expresses their skillset through excellent oral and written communications.
- Project management skills, with a history of collaborating across team, to meet deadlines.
- Bachelor’s degree in Web Development, Computer Science, Arts Management, or a related field or equivalent years of experience.
- At least 6 years of operating as a Webmaster or Web Developer.
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of Web production, including the use of advanced HTML, CSS, XML, web analytics/ search engine optimization (SEO) and web standards.
- Intermediate proficiency of Drupal or general CMS principles and Adobe Creative Suite, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and creating accessible web content.
- Knowledge of SQL, JavaScript, and PHP, preferred.
- Experience managing and developing websites, social media channels, and other web assets, to include an understanding of the principles of good website design, user experience, and basic usability concepts.
- Experience using Google Analytics, including the setup of GA dashboards, the analysis of data, and the ability to interpret that data to produce reports for staff and to recommend actionable insights.
- Experience with Association Management Systems (AMS) such as NimbleAMS, Salesforce or relational databases, a plus.
- Demonstrated ability handling multiple projects with various deadlines, stakeholders, and priorities.

Additional Requirement:
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Washington, DC Metro area.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position works 37.5 hours per week Monday through Friday around core business hours (10:00 am – 4:00 pm ET).
- AFTA has a Hybrid Work Policy centered around staff member teambuilding and working in-person from the Office at least one (1) day each work week.
- Additional workdays in the Office may be required based on business need and managerial discretion.
COMPENSATION
- AFTA offers a full range of rich benefits along with competitive compensation. The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000.
