The job of GIS Specialist is done for the purpose/s of maintaining the Geographic Information System (GIS) that integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying forms of geographically referenced information for the District to forecast and plan for population changes that require new schools, changes in present schools, bus routing, and/or associated services; and ensuring that database information is accessible to departments that are affected by population models for short- and long-range planning.

Essential Functions

  • Attends meeting, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Collaborates with Information Technology services for the purpose of updating system applications and hardware.
  • Coordinates routing technicians in establishment of routes for all regular and special needs transportation services for the purpose of ensuring the most cost effective routes are established, coordinating bus stops, and identifying walk zones and potential hazards.
  • Maintains spatial database (GIS) of district information (e.g. students, bus routes, school boundaries, addresses, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student data is current and accessible to authorized users for District-wide planning including building and staffing requirements, establishing and maintaining school boundaries, design of bus routes and stops, and for accurate completion of related departmental functions.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for the purpose of ensuring the availability of documentation and compliance with establish policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitors data sources for the purpose of updating data to ensure system database remains current.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares system spatial and manuscript data, maps, and related data for the purpose of providing reference materials conveying information to other parties for follow-up actions.
  • Prepares state transportation reports as required for the purpose of communicating information to regulatory agencies and ensuring compliance with state administrative code to maintain funding for bus routes and pupil transportation.
  • Provides enrollment projections for the purpose of providing administration with reports to assist in anticipating and/or making boundary changes.
  • Researches a variety of topics for the purpose of ensuring compliance with relevant reporting requirements, securing general information for planning, taking appropriate actions, and/or responding to requests.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g. parents, district staff, government agencies, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, facilitating communication among parties and/or providing direction.
  • Responds to requests for the purpose of addressing immediate and future needs, system inquiries, informing of GIS applications and available services, and/or determining appropriate party for referral.
  • Trains Routing Technicians for the purpose of ensuring proper use and implementation of GIS system and procedures in compliance with district policies, procedures and state laws.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements:

  • Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems or related field.
  • Job related experience within a specialized field is required in Geographic Information Systems or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geographic Information Systems, statistical analysis or related field is preferred.
