About Our Opportunity
The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the Parks & Recreation Department’s Support Staff for Therapeutic Recreation. Support Staff will be responsible for program planning and implementation for youth with disabilities ages six (6) through the completion of high school. Summer Support Staff will complete weekly schedules of activities and lead all activities as well.

Afterschool hours are 2:30PM-6:00PM. Support staff may be schedule for additional evening and weekend shifts based on department need. This position is open until filled with application being reviewed weekly.
This position is open until filled with applications being reviewed weekly. Please note that this position starts on June 5, 2023 with some rolling start dates after June 5th to meet staffing needs.
This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Acts as play leader in group or individual games.
- Prepares recreation equipment for use.
- Supervises and/or participates in recreational activities.
- Organizes group activities.
- Takes children on field trips.
- Administers first aid as needed.
- Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs and problems.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Assist TR staff in planning and implementing academic, enrichment, health & wellness, and recreational experiences for school age youth.
- Assist afterschool participants with homework daily in subjects like reading and math.
- Assist with behavior mitigation and management interventions as needed.
Education & Experience
Required:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a camp setting for youth with disabilities preferred.
- Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certifications must be current or obtained by the first day of employment.
- General knowledge of the methods and practices of community recreation work including knowledge of the equipment and techniques, relevant rules and regulations of social, artistic, craft and/or athletic programs for children.
- Ability to instruct common recreational activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain discipline.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records.
