Position Details

This is an open and promotional recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill vacant positions for the 2023 – 2024 school year. The current vacancy works 8 hours per day, 12 months per year.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned administrator, assist in the preparation, installation, set-up, and operation of scenery, props, and sound, lighting and rigging equipment and systems for theater productions and special events; perform a variety of custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining performing arts center buildings and facilities in a safe, sanitary, clean and orderly condition; work a flexible schedule as needed by the position.

Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

Assist in the preparation, installation, set-up, and operation of scenery, props, and sound, lighting and rigging equipment and systems for theater productions and special events; assist in identifying and responding to theater lighting, sound and rigging needs.

Perform a variety of custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining performing arts center buildings and facilities in a safe, sanitary, clean and orderly condition; assist in assuring a safe environment for students, staff and the public.

Prepare, hang, hook up and operate lighting equipment; focus and adjust lighting to meet stage needs; install, hang and rig scenery, props, booms and other materials; assist in the construction, painting and set-up of stage sets including scenery and props used in theatre stage productions.

Inspect performing arts center facilities to identify custodial and maintenance needs; perform general maintenance and repairs; replace defective parts, light bulbs, and components as needed; perform preventive maintenance activities; report need for major maintenance and repairs to appropriate authority.

Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; spot clean and shampoo carpets; dust, sanitize and wipe down chairs, tables, furniture, equipment and woodwork; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris, cobwebs and graffiti as needed.

Move and arrange furniture and equipment as required; set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for theatre productions, special events and activities as assigned; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.

Pick up paper and other debris from grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to the performing arts center ; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to performing arts center buildings; empty waste receptacles; replace trash liners.

Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with paper towels, soap, toilet paper, tissues and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, light fixtures, doors and windows; unclog drains and toilets.

Operate a variety of equipment such as vacuums, mops, drills, saws, lifts, ladders, sanders, and various hand and power tools.

Apply paint to walls, stage floors, scenery and other surfaces; prepare surfaces for painting; remove paint as needed; maintain and repair theater chairs and other furniture and equipment.

Set up and operate sound equipment and assist in assuring proper connection, volume, mixing and amplification.

Lock and unlock doors and windows as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines.

Monitor inventory levels of designated supplies as required; assist with ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of supplies as assigned.

Report vandalism and safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate staff; respond to emergency custodial and maintenance requests as needed.

Maintain routine records related to supplies, inventory and assigned activities.

Entrance Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school and two years experience working with general maintenance and custodial functions or two years experience involving the set-up and operation of stage rigging, lighting, and sound equipment in a theater or similar environment is required.

Selection Process/Additional Information

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as demonstrated in their application materials, will be required to successfully complete a competitive testing process to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which may consist of a written examination, a training and experience evaluation, a performance examination, and/or structured oral interviews. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the appropriate eligibility list will be referred for a final selection interview. The Eligibility List resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no Eligibility List exists (Ed Code 45272).

Pay Increases: New classified employees are typically placed on the first step of the assigned salary range. Step increases occur annually until Step 5 is reached, after which longevity steps are allocated in accordance with years of service.

Benefits: Employees working 4 hours per day or more will be provided an option of Anthem Blue Cross HMO or Kaiser health benefits, as well as Delta Dental and MES Vision benefits; employee contribution amounts are shared with the District and vary depending on number of hours worked per day. (Employees may opt out of medical, dental and vision insurance but may require to provide proof of other health coverage.) The district also pays into a life insurance policy for all employees who work at least 4 hours per day. Additional options for life insurance and disability insurance are available.

Vacation: New employees earn vacation time on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Employees with years of longevity may earn up to 25 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year.

Holidays: Employees are allocated up to 14 scheduled holidays and 2 floating holidays per year; holidays are prorated based on months worked per year.

Sick and Personal Necessity: Employees earn sick leave on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of sick time per year. Employees may use up to 7 days of their sick leave balance each year for personal necessity purposes.

Retirement: Retirement: Employees working 4 or more hours per day and those already contributing to CalPERS will be automatically enrolled into CalPERS upon hire. The District’s CalPERS formula is 2% at 55 for employees enrolled with CalPERS prior to 12/31/2012 and 2% at 62 for employees who have already or will enroll into CalPERS as of 01/01/2013 or afterward. Employees working less than 4 hours per day will be included in an alternative retirement plan based on the use of pretax contributions.
