Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is looking for Mid-Level and Experienced Mechanical Hydraulic Software Engineers capable of contributing to all phases of the software development lifecycle (requirements, architecture, implementation, and verification) for our Everett, WA site. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Commercial Airlines (BCA) business organization.

As a Mechanical Hydraulic Software Engineer at the Boeing Company, you will be working on critical features of commercial airplanes, including main gear steering control, antiskid and autobrake control, and tire and brake monitoring.

The selected individuals will interface with suppliers and internal Boeing organizations to oversee development of new software and updates, ensure application of industry standards and Boeing requirements, and assure certification/compliance with FAA regulatory requirements. Engineers applying for this position would be working with one or more of the following specifications:

  • RTCA’s DO-178B/C, DO-330, DO-331, and DO-332 specifications
  • SAE’s ARP 4754A (Guidelines for development of Civil Aircraft and Systems)
  • SAE’s ARP 4761 (Guidelines and Methods for conducting the Safety Assessment process of Civil Aircrafts and Systems)

The software engineer is expected to apply the guidelines from DO-178B/C to software development projects, in order to support compliance and certification activities. The documentation reviews for this role range from requirements/design/test/SQA plan reviews to test automation reviews and problem report reviews.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with software suppliers in development of airborne systems software and related project management activities
  • Review and approve suppliers’ software lifecycle data throughout software lifecycle processes; from planning, requirements, development/implementation, verification and certification phases
  • Provide showing of compliance roles in accordance with FAA regulations associated with software development
  • Assist in stage of involvement (SOI) reviews/audits, as well as Requirements Reviews, Design Reviews, and Test Readiness Reviews
  • Evaluate technical and/or schedule risks and opportunities to mitigate risks
  • Assist suppliers in implementing risk mitigation plans
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and supply chain personnel
  • Work collaboratively with suppliers to ensure that each system operates as designed and free of safety issues and quality problems
  • Manage software development milestones and performance metrics to track and meet product schedules
  • Review and disposition problem reports written by Systems Engineers and Suppliers
  • Provide software inputs to certification plans and summaries to support compliance findings

This position is expected to be onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.
  • 3+ years’ experience in software engineering.
  • 3+ years’ experience with software development using either Java, C++, or Python.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with concurrent software and distributed systems.
  • 5+ years’ experience in software development life cycles, configuration management and best agile software engineering practices.
  • 5+ years’ experience developing, documenting and maintaining architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • 2+ years of experience in RTCA DO-178(B/C) Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification.
  • 1+ years’ experience leading software development projects.
  • Leads activities to develop, document and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Leads development, selection, tailoring and deployment of processes, tools and metrics.
  • Experience using common software version control tools such as Git.

Typical Education/Experience:

Mid-Level (Level 3)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Experienced (Level 4)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range Mid-Level: $112,200- $151,800

Summary pay range Experienced Level: $130,900- $177,100
