Position overview
Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy (IGAC) is looking to hire a staff attorney, who under the direction of the LAS Director, and the managing attorney, will conduct legal reviews of cases eligible for legal advocacy services, consult and advise on agency programs to judges/medical professionals/disabled wards regarding agency programs and services, and coordinate and disseminate information to service providers, community groups, professional associations and recipients of medical health services in Adams County. This position serves as an information resource contact. This position also conducts technical research, complies data, and drafts findings. Travel to attend meetings is required by this position. Springfield Illinois is the nearest regional office and would be the office of choice if adminstrative services are needed. Testifying on introduced legislation that has an impact on persons with disabilities and our agency rounds out a general list of duties. Work is performed remotely in Adams county with a regional office location in Springfield, as this will be a new county of coverage for IGAC.
Job Responsibilities
1. Conducts legal reviews of cases eligible for Legal Advocacy Services.
*Determines eligibility and enforces compliance with Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code and related mental health laws
*Investigates complaints involving compliance and enforcement of mental health and related civil laws
* Advises managing attorney to initiate administrative and judicial proceedings
2. Explains the legal rights of eligible disabled persons
*Consults and advises attorneys, judges, medical professionals, and eligible persons on programs and services, as well as answering questions involving application of IGAC policies and procedures.
3. Coordinates and disseminates information to service providers, community groups, professional associations and recipients of mental health services concerning legal representation of the rights of persons with disabilities.
*Summarizes various provisions and pertinent statutes and regulations.
* Travels to attend meetings
4. Conducts technical research, compiles data, and drafts detailed findings.
5. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires a license to practice law in the State of Illinois.
2. Requires graduation from a recognized law school.
Preferred Qualification
1. Prefers two (2) years of experience with relevant administrative, statutory, and case law references at administrative, trial, and appelate levels.
2. Prefers ability to interpret rules, and regulations and propose solutions to administrative questions.
3. Prefers ability to interact forcefully, yet cordially, with other professionals, judicial officers, and eligible clients.
4. Prefers two (2) years of experience working with Mental health law and interpretation
5. Prefers three (3) years of experience in technical research and writing detailed reports

3. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
4. Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to job duties.
