Tapper

Overview

The purpose of this position is to make service connection taps on water distribution mains, perform inspections on new service connections, and ensure that all service line installations comply with WaterOne rules and regulations. This position does not have a required number of emergency call outs that would normally be expected of the operations crew members.

WaterOne provides competitive benefit and compensation ranges. Selected candidates are placed in the position’s pay range based on their qualifications.

Pay Range: From $19.86/hour

Responsibilities

  • Install service connection taps up to and including 2″ on distribution mains.
  • Inspect fire line connections to distribution mains for proper installation. Record exact location of the valve.
  • Inspect for cross connections if some other source of water system is involved.
  • Perform service disconnection in cases of enlargement, relocation or temporary service.
  • Make enlargement taps, up to and including, 2″ for service connections being enlarged.
  • Perform taps on dry lines for WaterOne crews and contractor crews. Remove temporary taps.
  • Evaluate excavations made by plumbers for safety and compliance with OSHA regulations prior to beginning tap.
  • Deliver service connection materials to job sites, including meters, meter pits, covers, meter setters, and curb boxes.
  • Work closely with plumbers and builders to resolve problems; provide information on WaterOne standards and policies in complex situations.
  • Assemble 5/8″, 3/4″ and 1″ meter into setter.
  • When necessary, remove and replace defective corporation stops from water main.
  • Provide immediate supervisor with weekly report of completed and rejected taps and preliminary inspections.
  • Complete paperwork associated with tap and preliminary inspection. Records accurate ties for corporation stops, valve and meter pit locations.
  • Schedule and coordinate taps with contractors and properly prepare paperwork before and after tapping.
  • Coordinate projects with Developer Services staff in order to ensure WaterOne standards and project needs are met.
  • Keep Supervisor informed of unusual situations and problems.
  • Use GPS equipment to gather coordinates of tapping valves, meter pits, vaults, and points on the water main where the connection is made.
  • Inspect all new service connections and performs follow-up work on rejected preliminary inspections and other irregularities.
  • Maintain parts inventory on assigned vehicle. Maintain tools and equipment used. Schedule routine maintenance of assigned vehicle and report problems with vehicle to Fleet Services. Maintain clean vehicle, tools, and equipment.

Qualifications

Required Education, Skills & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of work experience in water utility distribution system maintenance or closely related field.
  • Grade I Water Distribution Operator’s Certification (or ability to obtain certification within 12 months).
  • Maintain knowledge of tools and equipment used when making taps and changing meters.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision and demonstrate a high level of integrity.
  • Requires strong verbal and written communications skills and good customer relations skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software with emphasis in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency or ability to become proficient in the use of SAP, GIS, and AIMS software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment and excellent decision-making skills.
  • Requires manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of WaterOne’s service connection standards, rules and regulations, and policies pertaining to service connections, and material standards.
  • Ability to instruct plumbers and enforce WaterOne service connection standards. Ability to recognize and identify potential hazards of cross-connected plumbing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and clearly written records and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people and demonstrate cooperation and flexibility.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
  • Requires mechanical aptitude.
  • Availability to work overtime, as required, and be willing to work irregular hours.
  • Must pass post offer medical exam, including drug screen and background verification (may not apply to current employees).

Preferred Education, Skills & Experience

  • Post high school education in a technical discipline.
  • Experience working directly with plumbers, builders, and contractors.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally lift/or move up to 100 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to use a computer for five hours a day. The employee must be able to move occasionally from one location to another or be able to remain in a stationary position for up to several hours a day. The employee must be able to use office productivity equipment such as a personal computer, calculator, printer, and copy machine. The employee must be in possession of a licenses and be able to operate a vehicle at any given time. The employee must be able to occasionally position self to perform and inspect taps and to view and inspect other field activities. The employee must be able to frequently work in outdoor weather conditions.
