Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, the Talent Acquisition & Retention Specialist acts as an ambassador to employees and prospective employees, providing information and support services at all stages of the employee life cycle: recruitment, onboarding, orientation, transition, and retention. The Talent Acquisition & Retention Specialist works with management in developing strategies to recruit and retain a strong, diverse work force, and promotes the organization as an employer of choice in the community. The Talent Acquisition & Retention Specialist should be highly efficient, organized, and approachable and have a solid knowledge of various HR functions and administrative responsibilities.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the agency is founded upon, to the staff, youth, and the community we serve.
- Collaborate with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team to research and develop opportunities to recruit, retain, and promote a culturally diverse workforce.
- Work with the HR Department and agency management to define and implement recruiting and staffing strategy.
- Manage all phases of the recruitment process from application to hire through maintenance of the HRIS applicant tracking and recruiting system.
- Review, update, create interview questions using HR best practices as roadmap.
- Train and aid hiring managers to support recruiting activities to support retention goals.
- Under the direction of the HR Generalist assist with the orientation of new or transfer of employees.
- Help develop, refine, and coordinate new hire orientation and on-boarding for all new staff.
- Advertise and promote employment opportunities to the internal and external communities, creating strategic connections with partners for recruitment pools.
- Under the direction of the HR Generalist manage the onboarding of Partners, Contractors, and other external agency contacts.
- Serve as a point of contact with AmeriCorps service members, and provide necessary workplace support, information.
- Engage with employees at key benchmarks to maintain high levels of employee engagement and positive relationship with the agency.
- Assist with developing and implementing staff appreciation initiatives.
- Provide trends and data to support management in retention strategies.
- Composure and confidentiality required to handle sensitive HR issues.
- Compliance with all Covenant House Alaska policies, Federal and State of Alaska Department of Labor legal requirements.
- Keep supervisor fully always informed.
- Initiative in taking on other duties identified or as assigned
Education and Experience
- Associates degree in Business or HR field (can substitute experience for education on year-by-year basis)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience and responsibility for recruiting, retention, and employee development
- HRIS experience with recruiting/applicant tracking
- Knowledge of employment interview techniques and HR best practices
Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including administrative skills and attention to detail.
- Time management, good organizational follow-through, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Experience writing interview questions, job postings and/or job descriptions, preferred.
- Ability to learn and navigate multiple databases including Microsoft Office suite.
- Proficient with standard computer operating systems.
- Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies.
- Approachable, builds rapport well and practices attentive and active listening.
- Ability to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds and tolerate differences in behavior.

- Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
- Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License and a clean driving record.
- Pass federal, state, and local background investigations.
Working Conditions
- Position is established in an office setting within the Youth Engagement Center.
- Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments.
- Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
- Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
- Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairways in case of emergency to exit building safely.
