Job Summary
The Parks & Community Services Department is seeking a dynamic Swim Instructor Coordinator with a proven track record of motivating staff and providing innovative approaches to meet desired goals and outcomes. The chosen candidate will support a collaborative One City organizational approach and effort to achieve high performance.
The Bellevue Aquatic Center operates as part of the Enterprise Fund, which is charged with attaining full cost recovery or all assigned costs including direct operating expenses, maintenance, and select department and City overhead. The Aquatic Center features two indoor pools: The Warm Springs Pool is maintained at 92° F and is used for water therapy, swim lessons, and open swim. Its accessibility features include a wheelchair ramp, gradual entry, and two lifts. The Blue Lagoon Pool is maintained at 82° F and features six, 25-yard lap lanes and an attached 13-foot dive tank with a diving board and water slide. This pool is used for open swim, lap swim, master’s swims, water exercise classes, swim lessons, and swim and teams.
The Swim Instructor Coordinator is a variable position responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring a successful, comprehensive Swim Lesson Program for all ages, Lifeguard Training Classes, Junior Lifeguard Program, and Water Exercise Classes under the general supervision of the Aquatic Recreation Supervisor. This position will play an active role in the delivery of swim lessons to Bellevue Aquatic Center patrons. The Swim Instructor Coordinator will perform the following essential duties and responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Programming: Work collaboratively with the Aquatic Recreation Supervisor to develop a robust, comprehensive swim lesson program that serves all ages. Ensure programs meet the broadest needs and interests of a diverse community including equity and accessibility. Provide administrative duties associated with the swim lesson program, including but not limited to coordinating facility and staff schedules, developing and implementing marketing plans, monitoring program revenue and expenditures, and providing exceptional customer service and conflict resolution.
- Staff Development: Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate instructors supporting the comprehensive Swim Lesson Program, Lifeguard Training Classes, Junior Lifeguard Program, and Water Exercise Classes.
- Facility Management: Ensure facility and program equipment are kept in safe and operable condition while swim lessons take place; inform the Aquatic Program Manager, Aquatic Recreation Supervisor, or Resource Management on facility repairs and enhancements.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
- Works under the general supervision of the Aquatic Recreation Supervisor.
- Exercises supervision over swim lesson instructors.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public sector organization and program operations, specifically aquatic programs.
- Knowledge of program management including planning, scheduling, monitoring, and problem solving.
- Knowledge of facility management and scheduling.
- Knowledge of the methods and procedures of program budget development and control.
- Considerable knowledge of City, state and federal laws and regulation relevant to aquatic recreation, as well as departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of effective employee management and motivation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; particularly customer service and conflict resolution.
- Ability to relate and work with a diverse population with a broad range of interests and needs.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures to ambiguous situations.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of citizens, business partners, community groups and City staff. Oversee the development of public involvement processes and community outreach.
- Ability to supervise the work of staff that involves coordinating, assigning, monitoring and evaluating work; hiring, training, developing, counseling and disciplining staff.
- Ability to prepare and analyze budgets, schedules, reports, policy and procedures manuals, and correspondence.
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements
- Graduation from High School or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- Two or more years of experience teaching swim lessons at all levels and lifeguard training classes, as well as supervisory experience.
- First Aid, CPR, AED, and BBP certifications are required.
- Current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard certification is required.
- ARC Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certifications preferred. Must obtain ARC Lifeguard Instructor certification within first six months of employment.
- Candidate must successfully pass a criminal background check prior to being hired.

Definition of a Variable Employee
- Hours will vary depending on shift; up to 28 hours per week.
- Note: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month)

Paydays – The City of Bellevue pays employees on the 8th and the 23rd of each month (24 pay periods per year).

The mandatory DRS retirement pension plan provides the required social security replacement plan.
