The Corporate External and Legal Affairs (CELA) Environmental Sustainability (ES) team coordinates overall science-based, measurable, and scalable sustainability investments and outcomes across the company – engaging with business groups to set goals related to reductions in the environmental impacts of business operations and positive environmental outcomes resulting from technology and policy development.
The Sustainability Science Team (SST) is one of four pillars of CELA’s ES team. We are looking for a Sustainability Scientist to join our SST to help us ensure Microsoft’s sustainability efforts are led by the best available science and to help inform and co-design sustainability solutions to Microsoft’s and the world’s sustainability challenges. This role will support work across a range of topics including climate risk, carbon removal, biodiversity, water, waste and AI and sustainability.
The successful candidate will be an emerging sustainability science leader with a deep understanding of the Earth’s systems, analytical, research and writing skills, and the ability to bridge the gap between science, technology and global sustainability challenges.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree AND 3+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area
- OR 5+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Masters in Earth systems or other environmental science AND 4+ years of experience working at the intersection of environment and technology,
- OR a PhD in Earth systems or other environmental science, AND 2+ years of experience, working at the intersection of environment and technology.
- Analytic and data representation skills
- Writing skills with the ability to translate ideas into clear, high impact communications
- the flexibility to quickly build a deep and comprehensive understanding of new sustainability domains
- Experience with corporate reporting and disclosure processes
- Experience working at the intersection of sustainability and AI
- Data science experience ( e.g. managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results )
- Success collaborating across multiple teams and levels
- Experience managing projects in a complex dynamic organization
- Ability to excel in an ambiguous environment
- Experience working in the private sector, government, or NGO
Corporate Social Responsibility IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $101,200 – $194,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $130,000 – $213,200 per year.

- Support exploration of new and emerging trends in the sustainability field by following the latest science, conducting research and analysis, and providing regular summaries of relevant topics.
- Review Microsoft publications to ensure they are aligned with the latest science and our sustainability operational commitments and positions.
- Help with the development of internal and external publications related to sustainability science and technologies that help to inform or communicate Microsoft’s sustainability work.
- Support cross-company initiatives working at the intersection of AI and sustainability.
- Develops and manages partnerships with nonprofit, community-based, and related groups to advance corporate social responsibility (e.g., philanthropies, accessibility, sustainability) programs.
