Department Overview

The Coworkers of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E’s electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

Leads teams of employees in testing and commissioning protection and control systems in the service territory as it relates to the transmission lines or substations. Establishes correct maintenance and construction practices for protection and control equipment. Oversees protection system, the testing of the system, and the associated documentation to meet compliance.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

Although, we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

Annual Minimum: $123,000.00

Annual Maximum: $197,000.00

Job Responsibilities

  • Completes and maintains all work documentation or reporting.
  • Develops and maintains work relationships, regional contacts and internal networks.
  • Develops and/or executes action plans to address deficiencies in process or employee skill/knowledge and track the progress of those plans.
  • Effectively manages staff/team(s) through recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and rewards and recognition.
  • Effectively utilizes resources by monitoring individual technician’s productivity. Ensures technicians charge time appropriately for each maintenance task while monitoring unit cost.
  • Efficiently and accurately performs monitoring and analysis functions for ongoing projects and work efforts. Reviews current work practices for operational efficiencies and deficiencies and provides feedback. Follows up, and recommends improvement to appropriate parties.
  • Ensures Substation Test work, including regulated preventative and corrective, is completed as scheduled and to quality expectations, while monitoring compliance to standards and specifications.
  • Facilitates or leads weekly team meetings/tailboards. Conducts training as needed.
  • Identifies and pursues productivity improvements and implements work practices to reduce operating costs while meeting corporate and regulatory compliance.
  • Identifies and reacts to complex field decisions, utilizing technical knowledge and experience to move forward quickly, considering cost, risk, safety, quality and system impact. May make certain changes to the work plan as deemed necessary for the situation. Prepares a re- estimation of the work and /or adjusts the scheduled maintenance as necessary.
  • Proactively prepares for emergency situations; supports company efforts during emergency situations; communicates deficiencies in emergency response/preparedness; resolves issues quickly and efficiently using the correct resources.
  • Provides clear, professional, proactive communication with transmission and distribution partners in a variety of field situations.
  • Regularly visits work sites to monitor operations.
  • Supervises direct reports including IBEW electrical technicians and Test Specialists.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Electrical, instrument and Control or electronics Field, or equivalent related experience which includes experience in installation and maintenance of protective relay equipment and substation equipment.
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in calibrating, installing, and in-service testing of relay systems, three of which must be in a leadership or project management capacity.
  • Six (6) years’ experience commissioning, troubleshooting and maintaining substation equipment.
  • Certificate of completion of Apprenticeship in the occupation of Electrical Technician

Desired:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering-Electrical or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
