The Structural Representative shall assume the following functional responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with the construction contract requirements and shop drawing prepared by contractor
- Verify field dimension including vertical and horizontal field control for structures
- Ability to work independently. Ability to perform duties in the construction field office and effectively make decisions concerning construction work in progress and solving field problems.
- Ability to use an automatic level and transit for the purpose of verifying line and grade.
- Thorough understanding of Caltrans field methods, practices, and construction office procedures.
- Assist in inspections to assure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and special provisions on all phases of structural construction such as bridges, foundations, walls, falsework, shoring, and drainage structures.
- Check grade, alignment, quantity, falsework, and shoring calculations.
- Assist in the preparation of contract change orders, contract estimates, progress pay estimates, and other documents or reports required for the Project.
- Coordinate the sampling and testing of construction materials to monitor compliance with contract specifications.
- Oversee staff performing daily field inspections
- Prepare Daily diaries and maintains inspection records
- Ability to review submittals including shop drawings, product data, samples, test samples, QA plans submitted by the contractor
- Resident Engineer with response to Request for Information from Contractor
- Monitor contractors construction operations are in compliance with CalOSHA requirements and guidelines.
- Prepare reports, opinions, and recommendations for review by team leaders prior to submission to clients concerning the structures
- Ensure conformance with standards, established engineering practices, applicable codes and technical adequacy of design and construction
- Keep abreast of new methods and developments
- General office administration, including report reproduction, collation and deliveries will also be expected
- Performing calculation and acceptance of temporary structures as used in construction of bridges and structures including falsework, temporary shoring, working platforms, temporary supports.
- Preparation of final as-builts
- Perform constructability reviews
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of six (6) years of bridge or structural construction inspection as related to major public works projects and a four-year degree in civil engineering is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years as a Structural Representative on major public works projects.
- Licensed Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California.
- Knowledge of stress analysis, structural mechanics, and strength of materials.
- A thorough understanding of Cal-OSHA practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Caltrans and Greenbook construction practices and the physical characteristics and properties of various bridge construction materials including concrete.
- Experience in the following areas: foundations, pile driving, concrete prestressing, bridge deck construction, cast-in-place wall construction, falsework, and shoring.
