Western Michigan University is accepting applications for a Strategic Communications Staff Assistant for the 2023-24 academic year. Located in Kalamazoo, Mich., Western Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and sponsor of 16 Division I sports. WMU is looking for candidates that will help continue to foster growth and success of Bronco Athletics, as well as enhance the Western Michigan Athletics brand.
Overview:
Bachelor’s degree recommended. Preferred qualifications include a minimum of one year of experience in intercollegiate media relations/sports information work, experience in desktop publishing and graphic design with Adobe InDesign and PhotoShop software, experience in writing, editing and designing effective publications, familiarity with StatCrew/Genius software, and strong communications skills. All candidates should possess the ability to meet deadlines and work nights/weekends.
Responsibilities include, but are not confined to: This role will serve as the primary contact for the WMU women’s basketball team, softball team and men’s soccer team under the supervision of the strategic communications staff. Assist other member’s of the strategic communications staff at major athletic functions (home football games). The staff assistant will be exposed to the media and public relations side of the sports industry, as well as work closely with areas of marketing and video production.
This is an 11-month appointment with a start date of August 1 and an end date of June 30, 2024. There is the possibility that this will be renewed for another year.
Primary Duties:
• Assist in game-day management and statistics for women’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball and assist coverage of other sports
• Writing press releases and game notes; daily updating and maintenance of WMU’s athletics website
• Update / provide content for social media channels
• Implement publicity campaigns to increase fan engagement across all sports
• Assist with the maintenance of archival information, records, photos, statistics, etc.
• Work with video staff to create video web content, specialty packages & features
• Report to the NCAA & Mid-American Conference
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year experience in an intercollegiate sports information office
  • Efficient writer
  • Experience with social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Working knowledge of various Statcrew/Genius software packages
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign & Photoshop
  • Must be self-motivated with attention to detail and accuracy
  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • Evening and weekend hours with some travel
