Job Description

Bemidji State University (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as the Stationary Engineer. BSU’s vision is to educate people to lead inspired lives. The Stationary Engineer ensures the rules and regulations set by the Minnesota Division of Boiler Inspection are met regarding the operation of high- and low-pressure boiler plants and ensures the supply of steam to the campus is maintained consistently at the recommended levels.

Candidates must also possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a driving history background check and a satisfactory physical assessment.

Responsibilities of the Stationary Engineer include:

  • Operating and maintaining the high-pressure steam heating plant on an assigned shift; checking water levels and feeding the water pumping system; maintaining steam pressure at the proper range; operating oil- and gas-fired steam boilers; keeping shift logs on all meters, temperatures, and pressures. Percent of Time: 75%
  • Inspecting boilers, boiler equipment, and boiler room appurtenances; making periodic inspections for proper operation of equipment; making minor repairs or emergency repairs, as needed; reporting needed replacements and major repairs; lubricating equipment according to schedules and manufacturer’s recommendations. Percent of Time: 5%
  • Operating the water conditioning and testing equipment so peak efficiency is maintained; testing boiler and condensate water for hardness and concentrates; adding chemicals and adjusting blow down to keep boiler and condensate water at prescribed levels after test results; maintaining all water treatment equipment to ensure it is working properly. Percent of Time: 5%
  • Keeping records as instructed by the Chief Engineer and maintaining a clean and safe environment; updating and completing records on heating plant operations as required; applying knowledge of hazards and safety precautions; cleaning and painting all equipment and maintaining a neat working area; performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Percent of Time: 5%
  • Assisting with other duties campus-wide during regular and emergency hours when additional help is required by the maintenance department to ensure any undue hardships for students, faculty, and staff are avoided, whenever possible; maintaining and repairing equipment, when needed, during emergency hours; performing campus-wide maintenance duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer; assisting with snow removal. Percent of Time: 5%
  • Operating and maintaining Heating Plant HVAC equipment and plumbing systems; making periodic inspections for proper operation of equipment; making minor or emergency repairs, as needed; reporting needed replacements and major repairs. Percent of Time: 5%

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • First Class B Grade Engineer’s license.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with high-pressure gas and oil-fired steam boilers.
  • Experience operating and maintaining a steam heating plant.
  • Skills in the use of maintenance tools, control systems, welding equipment, HVAC systems.
  • Experience reading sketches and taking oral and written instructions.

For those who love the outdoors, there are wooded, multi-use trail systems within minutes of campus and community parks with walking trails, playgrounds and a skate park. Lake Bemidji State Park and its miles of navigable trails is located directly across the lake from BSU, and the Buena Vista Ski Area – just 12 miles north of campus – offers downhill skiing and BSU-sponsored student transportation in the winter months.
