DESCRIPTION
The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $170 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.
Under supervision and with training, the incumbent will assist with mouse colony management including breeding, genotyping genetically engineered mice, and conducting mouse experiments. Mouse experiments will include injections, collection of mouse tissues for analysis, and performing physiological analyses related to cardiovascular function. Mouse tissue analysis will include processing for histology and immunomicroscopy (sectioning and staining). Various cellular and molecular studies will be performed. This will include protein and nucleic acid isolation from tissue and cells, and analyses such as Western blotting, immunoprecipitation and, quantitative PCR. Cell isolation and culture (primary cardiac myocytes and continuous lines) may be performed, as will analysis of cells (staining, single cell isolation and analysis, in vitro culture). The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in lab organization, ordering materials and equipment for experiments, training new lab members in standard procedures, preparation of data reports and required regulatory documents, and communication of results to supervisor and laboratory members. Must be willing to work in a team environment and resolve conflicts amicably. The incumbent’s research will advance the overall mission of the laboratory studying heart form, function and rhythm generation. Other duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Theoretical knowledge of Biology, Anatomy, Physiology and Disease including Genetics and Cell Biology as typically attained by a Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Biology, physiology, bioengineering or a related field preferred.
- Ability to perform DNA/RNA extraction, purification, quantification, and PCR/qPCR studies.
- Experience in working with mice, including breeding and genotyping; ability to harvest and process tissues for histology, flow cytometry, protein, and nucleic acid analysis.
- Interest in performing mammalian cell culture, including cell lines and primary cells.
- Interest in cloning, restriction digests, ligation, transformations, and DNA/plasmid preps.
- Interest in learning to capture high quality images of cells and stained tissues using a fluorescence microscope and ability to learn to use the confocal or other microscopes with supervision in the microscopy core.
- Experience in designing, executing, and analyzing research data in an organized manner and presenting findings to research faculty and all lab members.
- Ability to follow established safety and hazardous material guidelines and to keep an organized and clean laboratory bench.
- Ability to use standard software programs such as Word, Excel, Power point, Prism and Photoshop to quantify results and present images and data.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Interest in learning to use other software programs as needed such as ImageJ.
- Experience in morphological, molecular, physiological or biochemical analysis on mouse / rodent heart.
- Experience in general molecular and biochemical laboratory studies.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must be willing to work with mice.
- Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as required to keep steady workflow and meet deadlines.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $56,564 – $90,995 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $27.09 – $43.58
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
