DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, the incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator in research on the ecology and evolution of mosquitoes. The lab works primarily on the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and other mosquito species, in order to understand how mosquitoes adapt to human hosts and habitats, and what makes them effective vectors of disease. Research includes how specific genetic changes rewire the brain, what makes mosquitoes succeed in a given habitat, and how environmental change is likely to affect disease transmission.

Incumbent will assist in research by performing standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA transformation), conducting behavioral and physiological assays (olfactometer assays, testing environmental stress tolerance), and functional experiments involving transgenesis or CRISPR (making mutant and/or transgenic mosquitoes). Incumbent will also assist the Pl by performing the following duties: order and maintain lab equipment and supplies, maintain cleanliness and safety of lab, prepare buffers and solutions, maintain mosquito colonies, and perform other general lab duties. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of molecular, cell, and developmental biology including relevant laboratory techniques gained through a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing standard and repetitive molecular biology techniques such as RNA and DNA preparation, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with sterile techniques, calculating molarity and dilutions, and preparing buffers, solutions and growth media.
  • Experience operating laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, balances, pH meters.
  • Proven knowledge of principles of basic light microscopy; experience with compound microscopes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized scientific terminology.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new experimental methods as required. Ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project.
  • Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Good organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skills in maintaining steady levels of lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records, and training others in purchasing procedures
  • Effective (English) oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds
  • Experience using MAC or PC, and associated software including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
  • Ability to confidently direct others in safety regulations to maintain a safe and efficiently functioning lab environment
  • Proven ability to develop, follow, and troubleshoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from the PI.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing to work with insects as experimental animals.
  • Must be able to work safely with lab chemicals and biohazardous chemicals.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime (evening or weekend) based on needs of experiments.
  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 – $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 – $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
