I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

The Office of Animal Research (OAR) supports the highest standards of humane care and use of laboratory animals for research and teaching purposes and assures compliance with university and federal guidelines.

Assist the vivarium manager with creating the daily husbandry schedule, overseeing cagewash operations, conducting room inspections to assess animal health and cage environment, record keeping, daily/weekly metrics, animal receiving, and census scanning, as well as quality assurance to include animal health surveillance.

The incumbent will maintain inventories of needed supplies, monitor the effectiveness of facility sanitation, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), as well as internal facility reports for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters. In addition, the incumbent will provide leadership, guidance, and training to the husbandry staff (including new hires) on facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal care.

The lead animal care technician is responsible for ensuring that animal care duties are performed in accordance with established departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs) and that University policies are followed.

Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Obtain a Laboratory Animal Technician certification (LAT) within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or equivalent preferred AALAS certification (ALAT level) and three years of experience in laboratory animal care.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple requirements.
  • Ability to comprehend written and spoken terms used in a biomedical research environment.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory, and research staff.
  • Two years of relevant laboratory animal research facility experience.
