Maggie Daley Park Climbing Wall Internship 2023

Description

The Recreation & Sports Management Intern at Maggie Daley Park, a Chicago Park District facility, will assist in the day-to-day operations of all summer camps, events, and the daily operations of the field house, skating ribbon, climbing wall and off-site attractions in the park. Duties will also include inventory management, equipment maintenance, event staff management with a special emphasis on customer service with the public. The internship position requires evening and weekend hours. Applicants should be recreation, sports management or physical education degree candidates looking to work on the operations side of a 29-acre public park, the crown jewel of the Chicago Park District. 20 of the 40 hours are paid. This includes customer facing duties, such as Wall-Attendant and Cashier.

The Maggie Daley Park internship program was created in 2017 and has a long history of successful team members that have moved on successful careers. There have been over 28 full-time interns in the program. There is a limited capacity. Initial interviews can be scheduled during the 2022 Holiday season. There are additional internship opportunities with both locations of Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.

Dates: March 15, 2023, thru October 31, 2023 (start and end dates are flexible)

Requirements

  • Degree or enrolled towards a degree in sports management, physical education, recreation, or related field.
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week. Will be paid for 20 hours at $16.00 per hour.
  • 20 hours to be paid for duties as a Wall Attendant and/or Cashier.
  • Remaining 20 hours unpaid are for administrative & management duties associated with completion of Internship program assignments and projects.
  • Friendly, outgoing and can oversee children and adults in a high-pressure outdoor environment.
  • Interested in sports and recreational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Team leader for events, camps, and rentals leading up to and on the day of the activity.
  • Provide excellent customer service. Assist in planning and booking summer camps, rentals, and events.
  • Manage retail and rental equipment inventory. This includes inspection for defects and ease of use.
  • Work Cashier, Climbing Wall Attendant, Bungee Trampoline Attendant shifts throughout the week including nights and weekends.
  • Be a leader in the MDP Street Team. This is a marketing position focused on getting the word out the to the public through distribution of marketing materials.
