News Director – KIRO TV

Job Summary

Cox Media Group in Seattle WA is seeking a team-oriented journalist to lead the KIRO 7 News team as News Director. This high-profile leadership role is responsible for leading an amazing, experienced team of journalist. This position will report to the VP/General Manager and the ideal candidate must have a proven track record with breaking news, severe weather, investigative and enterprise reporting and the successful delivery of digital content through a wide variety of products. This person must also have excellent leadership and solid interpersonal, people skills. Must be well-versed in recruiting, developing and retaining top talent. Ability to execute research based strategic plans and leverage new opportunities in a multi-media environment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Provide strategic and tactical direction for day-to-day news coverage, breaking news, special projects, investigative reporting, special-event coverage for all distribution channels.
  • Embrace and enhance CMG’s core mission to embrace diversity and produce innovative local content that builds trust and connects and reflects the communities we serve.
  • Lead newsroom team in executing the daily goals and station policies.
  • Supervise Executive Producers, Producers, and Managing Editor in carrying out the organizations policies and goals.
  • Work collaboratively to strategically distribute content on all platforms.
  • Grow and develop a diverse staff, to include identifying, recruiting and retaining top talent from a wide variety of sources.
  • Interview, hire, coach and develop employees; plan, assign, and direct work, appraise performance, reward and discipline as needed. Address complaints and resolve problems promptly.
  • Collaborate with consultants and internal resources to operationalize research.
  • Review previous news programs for critique of production, news content and personnel performance.
  • Interpret and execute research to grow and engage audience on all platforms in the market.
  • Enhance KIRO 7 News brand by demonstrating high journalistic integrity.
  • Prepare and execute departmental operational expense budgets.
  • Partner with station leadership on union negotiations and contracts.
  • Lead, mentor, coach individual team members and their leaders to regularly evaluate and improve performance and professionalism.
  • Play a role in supporting key community partnerships.
  • Actively promote cultural change while being an innovative and supportive leader. This includes: working collaboratively and communicating proactively; understanding the needs of and soliciting/monitoring feedback from managers/employees.

What we look for

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years television newsroom leadership experience is required, with previous news director experience preferred.
  • Must have a strong background in news research and proven experience in a multiplatform newsroom.
  • A proven track record developing employees through regular feedback and performance management.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the vision, mission, and strategic direction.
  • Excellent comprehension around breaking news, major news, investigative and enterprise journalism.
  • Solid contract and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflicts under deadline pressure.
  • Experience working directly with News Associations in providing regional, national and international network material.
  • Ability to identify and match talents to tasks.
  • Ability to resolve equipment and staff assignment problems.
  • Ability and successful track record with identifying and recruiting top performers from a wide variety of sources.
  • Experience and successful achievement with interviewing, hiring, and training employees for both in front of and behind the camera.

The salary range for this position is $ 220,000 per year to $ 280,000 to per year. Final compensation for the role will be determined by a variety of factors such as skills, certifications, and relevant work experience.
