Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.
Hey, g’day, mabuhay, kia ora,你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you’re probably keen to find out what’s on offer, so we’ll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work
Our flagship office is in Sydney, Australia, but we’ve made our way from down under, to hubs in Austin and San Francisco, which are now home to our US operations. So whether you’re in Texas or California, you have choice in where and how you work in each of those states. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you’re near one), at home or a bit of both, it’s up to you.
What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
The role will report into the Lead Counsel (Product) within the Privacy and Product Team and will support product managers and engineers across the business, with a primary focus on the Teams and Education Supergroup. You will play a key role in delivering our strategy to design anything and publish everywhere and helping to empower organisations to utilise the next generation of exciting Canva Products.
A Day in the Life:
- You will advise the Teams and Education Supergroup on various privacy issues related to the Canva Teams and Canva Education product offerings.
- You will actively monitor privacy laws (including the Australian Privacy Act, GDPR and CPRA) and provide guidance on privacy matters related to Teams and Education.
- You’ll work closely with other Canva business functions to develop internal policies and programs to drive privacy awareness and compliance of all matters related to Teams and Education.
- You will provide regular training and build continuous learning initiatives to enable privacy awareness.
- You’ll assist with the assessment and resolution of data incidents (we have an on-call roster)
- You will advise on privacy, including through the completion of Privacy Impact Assessments, Jira tickets and queries to our privacy channel.
- You will be the eyes and ears for the legal team and refer out matters to other legal specialities where required; including employment, commercial and intellectual property specialists.
- You will advise on data processing agreements with vendors, due diligence and high risk Transfer Impact Assessments.
You’re Probably a Match if:
- You’ve proven your ability to work independently and are confident making judgment calls in ambiguous situations.
- You have a proven technical background and significant hands-on product counseling and privacy experience, preferably at or for rapidly growing technology companies or a law firm with technology clients.
- You understand tech and want to learn more about what happens “under the hood” on complex data analytics, tracking, “martech” and data sharing processes.
- You proactively identify and analyze opportunities and risks and achieve related goals.
- You have excellent communication skills and can make complex communications simple.
- You are excited about learning new technologies and privacy developments around the world.
- You are a pragmatic, business minded lawyer who wants to help build our business.
- You are risk aware, not risk averse.
- You know the law, but are conscious of industry practices and enforcement trends.
- You are able to influence team members to prioritize compliance and have experience doing this with leaders and partners across product, engineering and sales.
- You are focused on delivering projects even where this calls for you to go beyond the role of legal advisor and you’re not afraid to hustle other teams and Canvanauts to get things done.
- You are a collaborative teammate committed to working together to achieve business goals.
What we’re looking for:
- A deep understanding of key regulations globally (e.g. GDPR, Data Protection Act (UK), ePrivacy Directive, Australian Privacy Principles, Australian Consumer Law). Experience with childrens’ privacy regimes is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience at or for a rapidly growing technology company advising on privacy and product counseling matters.
- Experience working in a global company with laws team and partners based in different jurisdictions.
- Certified Information Privacy Professional or commitment to obtain certification within 3 months of joining.
