Job Summary: The Junior Zookeeper (JZK) Supervisor is responsible for furthering Sunset Zoo’s mission of inspiring conservation of the natural world by assisting the Education Department through the delivery of high quality, education and volunteer programs. JZK Supervisors are primarily responsible for supervising youth ages 10-13 and zoo teens ages 14-19 while youth and teens perform basic animal husbandry. JZK Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all animal husbandry and animal interactions are performed correctly and safely by volunteer participants in the education program. JZK Supervisors may also interact with adult volunteers.
Job Duties
- Performs basic animal husbandry with a variety of taxa from invertebrates to mammals.
- Assesses animal welfare to ensure high standard of care is provided to all animals.
- Maintains daily records concerning animal care and welfare.
- Maintains the safety and wellbeing of ambassador animals
- Follows USDA and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) animal regulations.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment.
- Delivers high-quality, education programs as directed by the Programs and Education Animals Manager and/or the Curator of Education.
- Maintains open communication with program participants and parents of participants enrolled in education programs.
- Supervises volunteers assisting with animal husbandry.
- Teaches animal handling skills to volunteers of all ages.
- Maintains inventory list of animal supplies.
- Performs minor first aid for injuries that may occur during education programs or at the Zoo.
- Safely operates motor vehicles and utilizes required PPE.
- Provides maintenance on and provides instruction in the use of equipment and supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Additional Qualifications
- High School Diploma, equivalent or GED.
- Three (3) months experience working with school-age children/youth.
- Three (3) months experience in animal husbandry or animal training.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Fifteen (15) hours of college credit in an animal/wildlife, environmental/conservation, natural resources, education, psychology, or sociology related courses
- Six (6) months experience working with school-age children/youth
- Six (6) months experience in animal husbandry or animal training
- First Aid/CPR certification
Other Information
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
- Applicants must pass drug test.
- Current availability is for leading summer youth volunteer program that will start May 30, 2023, and training will begin in May 2023.
- Must be able to work four or more days each week throughout the summer from 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Work performed at indoor and outdoor facilities throughout Sunset Zoo and surrounding spaces.
- Some work is performed outside, which may take place in extreme heat, extreme cold and direct sun which could expose staff to various outside atmospheric conditions.
- Noise level and activity level will be varied.
- Standing and walking for extended periods of time; speak, climb stairs, squat, kneel, crawl, push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs.
