DIRECTOR PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT RISK AND CONTROL

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

Director – Portfolio Management Risk and Control – The individual will work directly with the City National Rochdale (‘CNR’) Portfolio Management leadership team to anticipate, identify, and mitigate risks, including trading, operational, reputational and performance risks, which could impact business objectives, and to strive for excellence in audit/exam results. This individual will work with Portfolio Management business leaders to determine appropriate strategies to reduce/eliminate key risks, including advising on how to design, implement, and oversee appropriate controls of various elements of the business’s overall risk appetite framework and end to end processes. In addition, the candidate will help to instill a robust risk and controls culture throughout the department.

Wealth Management Division: City National Rochdale
As a member of City National Rochdale, the company’s Wealth Management group, you will provide white-glove service focused on intelligently personalized portfolio management for high-net-worth individuals, families, and institutions. WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Work with the Portfolio Management team to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to ensure that heightened regulatory standards are integrated into all aspects of Portfolio Management, including policies, procedures, processes, and risk management strategies.
  • Oversee, frame, lead, and construct/create comprehensive policy and process documents for Portfolio Management.
  • Identify, monitor, report on, and mitigate operational, regulatory, and compliance risks related to CNR’s Portfolio Management functions.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the organization, including legal, compliance, and risk management, to ensure that the heightened standards program is integrated into the broader risk management framework.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Research, and Client Service and Operations teams to contribute to the execution of the Portfolio Management risk management policy within the firm’s risk framework. Establish and assess operational controls to ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies, issue management, and exam management.
  • Develop policies and procedures for criteria used to escalate problems that occur.
  • Create and implement metrics and reporting mechanisms to monitor the effectiveness of the heightened standards program and make recommendations for improvement, as necessary.
  • Analyze and evaluate data that effects the technical, operational, and business functions and provide insight to the practical impacts/implications to the business line.
  • Build, maintain and operationalize document management systems supporting Portfolio Management.
  • Work independently and with other team members in conducting research, analyzing, and interpreting data and information to support strategies, initiatives, organizational planning, and business model adjustments.
  • Function as the business liaison for responses and initiatives related to RBC, CNB and CNR Risk, Compliance, Legal, and internal and external audits. Establish and cultivate strong working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with RBC and City National Bank’s teams to implement OCC’s Heightened Standards related to enhanced risk management and monitoring of regulatory issues which can impact Portfolio Management activities.
  • Work closely with the Business Affairs team on initiatives and aid in evolving them such that they become business as usual and distributed to the appropriate long-term owners.
  • Partner with team members to contribute concise communication materials for senior management. Develop presentations for internal and external meetings that are compelling, concise, and graphical to convey message.
  • Monitor regulatory changes that would impact the Portfolio Management group.
  • Participate in industry forums and events to stay abreast of regulatory developments and best practices in wealth management.
  • Contribute to and potentially run special projects and initiatives, as necessary.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Must-Have*

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business, or related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in wealth management, with a focus on risk management and regulatory compliance.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience managing projects

  • Exceptional relationship and partnership skills, Wealth Management risk management expertise and skills, and knowledge of the regulatory framework and entities affecting operational risk standards and activities.
  • Up-to-date understanding of key risk and control concepts, tools and trends relating to risk identification, ratings and prioritization, mitigation, and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills – and ability to interact with colleagues at all levels in a peer-like way and achieve goals without direct control over resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to Influence change, build relationships, communicate effectively, work under pressure, manage multiple priorities and deliver high caliber results.
  • An outstanding ability to analyze problems, apply quantitative analytical approaches, communicate effectively and confidently (both oral and written), work well in cross-functional teams.
  • Superb diligence and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.

Compensation

Starting base salary: $140,388 – $260,715 per year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. This job is eligible for bonus and/or commissions.
