As a Parks, Right of Way Level worker II – Irrigation Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems within the City of Goodyear. Your responsibilities will include conducting inspections, performing troubleshooting tasks, implementing repairs and upgrades, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and safety standards. Your expertise in irrigation systems and pesticide application will be instrumental in maintaining the health and functionality of the municipality’s landscapes.

Essential Functions
- Inspect irrigation systems: conducts regular inspections of irrigation systems across city properties. Identifies issues such as leaks, broken pipes, clogged, nozzles, or malfunctioning valves. Evaluates system performance and recommend improvements.
- Maintenance and repair irrigation systems: performs routine maintenance tasks, including adjusting sprinkler heads, cleaning filters, and replacing damaged components. Collaborate with other team members to ensure timely completion of maintenance and repair projects.
- Irrigation system upgrades: assists in the design and implementation of irrigation system upgrades, considering water conservation and efficiency measures. Installs new components or systems as needed, ensuring proper functioning and compliance with local regulations. Recommends improvements to existing systems to enhance their effectiveness and minimize water waste.
- Compliance and safety: ensures adherence to all relevant safety protocols and guidelines. Maintains knowledge of current industry standards, best practices, and emerging trends in irrigation systems. Stays updated on applicable local, state, and federal regulations regarding irrigation.
- Communication and documentation: maintains detailed records of work performed, including repairs and upgrades. Communicates effectively with supervisors, team members, and other stakeholders regarding irrigation-related issues, recommendations, and project updates.
Requirements
Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Experience: Minimum one to three years’ experience in landscape irrigation.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License and must possess the following certifications (or equivalent):
- AZ Pesticide Applicators License
- Certified Irrigation Technician from AZ Landscape Contractors within 6 months in position
Reading: Work requires the ability to read irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals.
Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as general algebra.
Writing: This position requires the ability to complete work orders and general correspondence.
Managerial: Semi-Complex – Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
Policy/Decision Making: Moderate – The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Work involving discretion is typically reviewed before finalized.
Technical Skills: Broad – Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.
Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate – Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information. The purpose of interactions is primarily the sharing of information
12 Month Objectives
- Obtain the State of Arizona Structural Pest Control Commission’s Certified Applicator License for Turf and Ornamentals or Weeds and Right of Way.
- Obtain one additional certification in an area agreed upon by the ROW Foreman and from the list of approved certifications.
- Adhere to City policies and safety procedures in accordance with the City guidelines, training and orientation for tools, equipment, and vehicles
- Become knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of irrigation maintenance systems in your assigned areas. To be proven by passing a field test administered by the Right of Way Irrigation Specialist.
- Complete training on operation of all equipment used for this position. Learn how to operate all equipment safely and efficiently to reduce risk to the operator, other staff, and residents in accordance with the standard operating procedures
- Become familiar with the Parks, Right of Way Operations Plan as it pertains to your assigned areas along with the Right of Way Irrigation Audit Program and follow accordingly.
- Adapt to a changing work schedule that may include working overtime and on weekends when necessary.
- Actively participate in the Parks Department Safety Program. Attend all safety meetings in the first year.
- Attend and participate in quarterly department meetings.
- Be able to positively interact with other city departments and personnel.
- Initiate some personal goals and objectives for your performance review.
