Our Global Research & Product Development (R&PD) teams are focused on market driven innovation to deliver high impact new products that enable future growth. Our teams provide a continuous pipeline of innovative new products and technologies, while leveraging James Hardie’s core value propositions of durability and low maintenance. Our role is to act as the technology pipeline for the global organization and ensure long-term performance of our products in current and future markets. As a Scientist in the Research & Development organization, the successful candidate will perform various fundamental studies to gain insights on various materials. The R&D Scientist will primarily be responsible for researching and characterizing cement and other inorganic & organic materials for existing and new product innovation development.

What You’ll Do:

  • Utilize scientific, analytical and engineering skills to characterize materials and formulate our products through advanced instrumentation, experiment designs, formulations, and testing: (70%)
  • Understand the cement chemistry and performance as well as the cementitious product performance
  • Has a strong interest and knowledge in sustainable inorganic materials
  • Use Design of Experiment (DoE) to design and conduct experiments in mechanical or chemical laboratories to test cement and its raw materials
  • Conduct literature surveys/reviews through independent research in order to understand cementitious material manufacture, chemistry and properties as well as the impacts of various cementitious materials on our products
  • Interface with the raw material suppliers on optimization of materials for our products and processes
  • Make sound recommendations to R&D leaders and the business based on solid data and in alignment with business strategy
  • Actively leads and supports the plant safety program (15%)
  • Demonstrate leadership in Zero Harm & Safety initiatives that keep both employees and the workplace protected
  • Apply 5S philosophy with R&D environments and all JH locations
  • Complete monthly OSHA mandated training
  • Ensure a safe work environment through good housekeeping and equipment operations
  • Promote safety culture by leading and participating in various safety initiatives
  • Manages projects effectively: (15%)
  • Utilize effective project management skills to deliver research studies in a timely manner as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed
  • Work cross-functionally towards a common goal

What You’ll Bring:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in natural materials like stones, silica, cement, polymer or composite materials
  • Demonstrated understanding of material structure-property relationships
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in inorganic materials, cement chemistry, and their impacts on the cementitious products
  • Possesses strong interests in sustainable raw material development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the operation of laboratory equipment and analytical techniques, for example, microscopes, SEM, XRD, XRF, FTIR, thermal analysis and/or mechanical testing
  • Demonstrated experience in applying statistical techniques to evaluate data and make decisions, with the ability to problem solve using a scientific yet practical approach
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to understand project objectives and their impact on the business
  • Possesses strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills with the ability to relate well and co-operate with people at all levels
  • Possesses solid organizations skills and is detailed oriented
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to various JH locations as needed
  • Minimum BS degree (MS and PhD are preferred) in the areas of materials science, minerology, geochemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic materials, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or mining engineering and or other related fields
  • Minimum 2 to 5 years of work experience in materials related industry or institutions
  • Experience in material property and performance characterization of materials properties required
  • Hands-on experience on scientific studies of material performance from designing experiments to operating characterization instrumentations and analyzing the data

The expected compensation range for this position is between $70,000 and $105,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, market conditions, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position qualifies for benefits which may also include a discretionary bonus.
