Job Description
The City of Avondale Parks & Recreation Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for the Recreation Specialist position. This is a part-time position without benefits. Incumbents are expected to work over 20 hours per week. Requires availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
If the incumbent works 20 hours per week for at least 20 weeks in a fiscal year, they will automatically gain membership in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
Recreation Specialists perform in a lead capacity or at a facility or major program area to ensure superior delivery of parks and recreation services. Recreation Specialist positions serve in a lead capacity over part-time Recreation Instructors, Parks and Recreation Aides, and volunteers and work independently under the general supervision of a Recreation Coordinator. They will provide support and customer service at special events, sports leagues, tournaments, facility rentals, and other recreational programs as needed. Schedules will vary by program season. Programs, rentals, and special events occur year-round and work schedules will vary based on program needs including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Regular, good attendance to assigned shifts is an essential function for this position. Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. May be performed at various locations.
Essential Functions
Assists in the development, promotion, and implementation of a diversified recreation program for all ages in accordance with community needs; evaluates program effectiveness; and recommends changes.
Acts as lead over operation of recreation facilities, special events, or other programs. Organizes and evaluates a wide variety of activities at a recreation facility or park site.
Assists in fee collection and accounting activities; reviews records and files to ensure proper accounting and documentation consistent with policies and procedures. Submits activity records and special reports.
Assists in the activities of staff, instructors, and volunteers; may plan, lead, train, direct, and monitor duties related to events, programs, facility operations, and activities.
Complete and file accident and statistical reports, incidents, and issues pertaining to program proceedings as required.
Open and close facilities. Perform on-site inspections and evaluations to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and City safety policies and procedures.
Provide general cleanup of grounds and facilities including, but not limited to, restrooms, dugouts, and parking lots utilizing various manually operated tools.
Provide clerical support by answering phones, filing documents, counter reception, and various other duties. Assist in the preparation of marketing materials, schedules, and supporting documents.
Communicate with the general public and provide excellent customer service.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalency or any combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work may qualify. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Some college-level coursework is desired.
One year (1) of relevant part-time recreation program experience, or related work experience.
Requires valid Arizona Driver’s License. Proof of certification for specialty instruction and background check. Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification upon hire.
Supplemental Information
Work requires the ability to read rosters and correspondence (i.e., e-mails) from the recreation office.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
Work requires the ability to write simple instructions and guides.
Lead lower-level staff and volunteers, including training, work planning, organizing, scheduling, and coordinating.
Must be able to work with citizens or participants in accordance with recreation policies and procedures.
Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees. Must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
