We Are Seeking
Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a Recreation Specialist who is innovative, driven, and passionate about serving our community.
The Recreation Specialist will report to and work hand in hand with the Recreation Coordinator.
The primary function of this position is to assist with innovation, planning, promotion, implementation and evaluation of programs, activities and special events to include preparing activities and curriculum, purchasing supplies, staffing, and working with contract instructors and vendors.
Additional responsibilities include: promoting and publicizing programs; preparing marketing materials and flyers, schedules of events, brochures, newsletters and activity guides. Additionally, the Recreation Specialist will independently develop, implement and promote programs & events for our Adaptive Recreation Program. The Adaptive Recreation program consists of leisure classes, community outings, Special Olympics and Friday night social events. The Recreation Specialist will also have the following responsibilities: frequently serve as is the manager on duty; be responsible for enforcement of policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations; secure the facility; provide customer service to include fielding questions and resolving conflicts with internal and external customers; answer customer inquiries by phone, in writing and in person; process program registrations; manage facility reservations by training staff on rental procedures; review permits; conduct facility tours; field customer inquiries; process reservations; collect payments; staff reservations, confirmations and resolve reservation issues; other duties as assigned. This position will also oversee assigned staff to include scheduling and training staff and resolving conflicts. This position’s schedule will vary as Community Center events & Adaptive Recreation Programs run during the day, evenings, and weekends. Please note this position’s schedule will be created by the Recreation Coordinator based on the need of the programs.
- Associate’s Degree in recreation or a related field or equivalent experience in recreation.
- Two years of customer service experience.
- Two years of supervisory experience, including program oversight in a recreation setting.
- One year of marketing, cash handling, and clerical experience.
- Knowledge of planning, implementing, maintaining and evaluating of recreation classes, programs, and events.
- Knowledge of planning, implementing, overseeing classes and programs for groups and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge of contract employee management as well as supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License
- Skilled in Microsoft Office
This position is an At-Will position and is FLSA Non-Exempt – eligible for overtime compensation.

The ideal candidate for this position will be passionate about our Adaptive Recreation program and the customer experience. Preferred experience includes two years in planning activities for youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and one-year experience in promoting and preparing marketing materials including flyers, newsletters, brochures and activity guides. We’re looking for a customer service driven individual to deliver and constantly improve our programs and processes that will ensure an outstanding experience for our community.
This position requires someone who is adept at finding common sense, well-reasoned approaches to difficult problems. Strong management, conflict resolution, and emergency response skills are required as well as communication and interpersonal skills. This person must be able to independently interact, engage and communicate with other staff, parents, participants and other individuals in a positive and professional manner.
