Recreation Center Specialist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position supports and provides instruction for a variety of recreational programs, classes, and events including: youth and adult sports programs, adult fitness, specialized recreation, summer day camps, after school program, special events, and future programs. The work includes program innovation, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This position involves a high level of public contact and requires excellent communication skills, enthusiasm, and superb and consistent customer service. It is under general supervision of a Center Coordinator at a Recreation Center.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises part time staff, seasonal staff, and contract labor.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provides quality customer service.

Organizes, promotes, implements and evaluates recreational programs, events and services; oversees and manages operations and logistics.

Prepares a variety of reports and other documents such as operating, activity and statistical reports, promotional materials and other forms of documentation.

Maintains contacts with neighborhood groups, schools, businesses, law enforcement agencies, volunteer and other community groups and provides necessary coordination of services.

Ensures proper behavior on the part of program participants; takes disciplinary action as needed; responds quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents.

Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, parents, coaches, volunteers, officials, and the general public on issues related to the Recreation Division.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Knowledge of community recreation practices.

Knowledge of techniques for planning and directing group, social and recreational activities for various age groups and various skill levels.

Knowledge of effective risk management and safety standards related to recreational program and community center operations.

Knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; general safety protocol; understanding policies and guidelines for dealing with an emergency.

Knowledge of objectives of recreation and leisure activities to include organizing and leading groups of people.

Skill to:

Skill to implement and evaluate programs and activities within departmental guidelines.

Skill to assess community recreation needs.

Skill to communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, managers, subordinates and the general public sufficient to convey information and to receive work direction.

Skill to ensure the safety of patrons utilizing our facilities.

Skill to operate office equipment, including computer equipment.

Ability to:

Ability to respond quickly in an emergency situation; follow and enforce rules; verbally communicate with the public and staff effectively.

Ability to bring creative ideas and programs to the center by staying current with popular trends and citizens’ desires.

Ability to lead and instruct groups in recreation activities.

Ability to establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in recreation programming is required.

Education/Training:

Bachelor degree with major coursework in recreation administration, physical education, leisure services or a related field and two years full-time or its equivalent of recreation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job is preferred.

License or Certificate:

A valid current Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is preferred.

First Aid/CPR certification is required within 90 days of employment.

Special Requirements:

Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, nights, and weekends.

Work environment includes the possibility of working outdoors in the extreme heat and cold.

Ability to travel to other work locations.
