Quantitative Researcher

This is a generalist research role at the intersection of climate science and machine learning. Projects may include weather forecasting, improving large-scale simulation techniques, or exploring alternative data sources for new product development. We are looking for someone with a quantitative background, with experience in climate science being a huge plus.

We’re open to candidates of varying experience levels for this role.

About the Team

The Data Science team is responsible for making sense of the terabytes of weather data Arbol has at its disposal. It forms the connective tissue between more client-facing teams, such as insurance, and back-end roles like data engineering or risk management. You’ll be joining a small team of data scientists, engineers and meteorologists and will have a unique opportunity to impact many levels of the firm, such as pricing and product development. This is an ideal position for someone interested in building machine learning systems for climate data while taking a deep dive into the parametric insurance industry.

What You’ll be Doing

    • Apply statistical analysis to large, climate datasets (PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, sklearn, statsmodels)
    • Work with risk and insurance teams to perform business-critical analytics

What You’ll Need

    • BA in computer science, statistics, meteorology, or related quantitative field
    • Experience in at least one of climate science and data science, with an interest in both
    • Experience programming in Python
    • Strong problem solving and analytical skills

What’s Great to Have

    • Software development experience, including coding best practices
    • Experience working with time series and/or climate data
    • Comfort with statistics (e.g., linear regression, hypothesis testing)

$100,000 – $200,000 a year

This role is open to candidates of varying experience levels. The amounts above represent a range that could be offered for candidates in this role, depending on qualifications.
