The Position

The Public Works Street Division is seeking a skilled and motivated person to join the team as the Lead. The Street team is dedicated to maintaining Beaverton’s public infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, multi-use paths, and bridges, ensuring their safety and accessibility.

The crew Lead is responsible for managing routine construction and maintenance projects. This will involve planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of the crew, as well as performing a full range of construction, installation, maintenance, and repair tasks. The Lead also has administrative duties that are important for keeping the work flowing effectively and efficiently.

We are looking for someone who has strong leadership abilities, as well as a comprehensive understanding of construction and maintenance processes. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively organize the work of the team, prioritize tasks, and ensure safety and quality standards are maintained.

This is a full-time, exempt, SEIU-classified position. There is one vacancy.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate Street projects: develop work plans, timelines, and resource allocations. Monitor progress to ensure all projects meet objectives and follow environmental practices.
  2. Serve as a member of the street/traffic systems section leadership team. Prepare reports, provide input into the five-year plan, and assist with budget preparation and monitoring.
  3. Coordinate work activities with staff, customers, contractors, vendors, and the public. May develop contract specifications for bid requests.
  4. Oversee the daily activities of the Street crew, including Operators, Technicians, and seasonal workers.
  5. Assign, schedule, and review staff work. Provide coaching to employees and provide input into performance evaluations. Participate in selection processes.
  6. Perform work of the street crew, including operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, ten-yard dump trucks, street cutting saw, ice sanding equipment and trailer, jack hammer, trenching machine, street paving/crack sealing machines, etc.) Identify equipment needs and ensure equipment is properly maintained.
  7. Review record keeping and documentation to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal agencies, laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
  8. Provide instruction and coaching for employees on safe and proper use of equipment.
  9. Additional duties are outlined in the class specification.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the operations, installation, construction, repair, and maintenance of Street infrastructure, including 1 year operating heavy equipment, and
  • 1 year in a lead role; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards
  • Commercial Drivers License-A with air brake and tank endorsements
  • ADA Curb Ramp construction certification
  • Traffic flagger training within three months of hire
  • First Aid and CPR certification within six months of hire
  • Ability to acquire Road Scholar 2 certification after hire
  • Ability to pass reference checks and satisfy the requirements of a background check, physical exam, and drug screen.

Compensation
Wage range: $30.93 – $41.46 hourly
Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
