Job Responsibilities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The South Carolina Department of Commerce’s (S.C. Commerce) mission is to create economic opportunities to increase choices for all South Carolinians, and our vision is to embrace the future to ensure South Carolina’s sustainable advantage.

S.C. Commerce’s Marketing and Communications Division is looking for a talented professional to serve as the agency’s Communications Coordinator. Candidates must have experience researching, writing, editing and disseminating internal and external communications that support an organization’s strategic plan and goals.

To be considered for the position, you must articulate in a cover letter your experience, knowledge and abilities that reflect a communications professional who is qualified to serve in this role. The competencies and responsibilities of the Communications Coordinator are outlined below.

  • Responsible for timely execution of the economic development project announcement (press release) process from writing to distribution by effectively communicating with companies, internal stakeholders and external allies.
  • Through independent research and consultation with subject matter experts, write, edit/proof and deliver written communications to support the agency’s various divisions and goals, including press releases, e-newsletters, talking points, social content, messaging for marketing materials, etc.
  • Utilizes experience and strong attention to detail to gather, organize and present written information in a clear concise manner while ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Manages the agency’s distribution/media lists including maintenance of the media request/response activity log.
  • Tracks and compiles relevant news media and social media and distributes as assigned.
  • Supports the preparation and delivery of detailed communications activity reports.
  • Collaborates and communicates with internal teams to establish compelling communications that are designed to share the Commerce story and help reinforce the agency’s brand.
  • Supports agency’s social media presence by posting communications to various platforms.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and relevant experience. An associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required work experience.

Must be able to communicate effectively, especially in writing.

Must have strong working knowledge of grammar, composition and style, including proficiency in Associated Press Style.

Must be able to work under and meet tight deadlines and adjust to last-minute changes to deadlines.
Must be assertive and proactive when engaging stakeholders for requesting and receiving information in a timely manner to meet assigned deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer a bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications or a related field.

Prefer at least two to three years of experience writing various communications, disseminating information to the public, and meeting and managing deadlines.
