Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

ITS Customer Experience & Engagement (CE&E) strives to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction through effective, reliable and professional IT support, in partnership with campus units. Among its functions, CE&E provides website, communications, digital accessibility, and voice services, and support from the Service Desk, including the Business Systems Help Desk.

Position Summary

This position is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The primary purpose of the Communications Specialist position is to work collaboratively within the Information Technology Services (ITS) Communications team to promote ITS and the services that ITS provides to campus. To this end, the Communications Specialist will research, write, and edit content, and tailor the message for each designated channel and audience. The person in this position will also create effective marketing and informational campaigns, graphic designs, web content, reports, social media content, surveys, and other materials. Additionally, the person in this position will collaborate on creating and/or organizing other forms of communication, which may include photos, video, digital signage, and collaboration software tools used by the team.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

* Ability to translate complex technical concepts
* Advanced organizational skills
* Detail-oriented

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

* Proven expertise in communications including writing, proofreading, and editing skills and verbal communication skills
* Ability to understand complex technical topics and to summarize in terms understandable to non-technical and varied audiences
* Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles and techniques for disseminating information to the public through a variety of media channels
* Considerable knowledge of AP and UNC style
* Advanced organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects occurring within a short timeframe; must be very detail oriented
* Considerable knowledge of organizational and collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft 365 suite)
* Ability to prioritize multiple work responsibilities and work closely and effectively with others
* Ability to identify and fulfill needs with a minimal amount of management
* Considerable knowledge of managing internal websites (e.g., WordPress, or similar)
* Considerable knowledge of graphic design and layout principles (e.g., Adobe and Canva)
* Demonstrated experience with social media content creation, scheduling and management
* Ability to set and meet deadlines
* Ability to work as a member of a team and/or independently in a fast-paced environment
* Experience working within a professional communications team in higher education or a large/complex organization

Required Licenses/Certifications

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

* The ability to traverse to various areas of campus in order to shoot photos and video with or without accommodation
* The ability to move items weighing up to 20 lbs with or without accommodation
