Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Project Manager III (5506).
Job Description
As a Project Manager, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, leading and controlling all aspects of highly complex capital projects to assist with the life cycle of projects from concept through design and construction to close out to implement lean construction practices in the department. Using data-based decisions, you will focus on quantifiable and measurable project delivery results and construction contract types.
Important and Essential Duties:
As a Project Manager III, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Plan, organize and manage all phases of project review to implement lean six-sigma construction practices at Public Works. This includes identifying project activities that don’t add value, reducing variability, improving understanding of client needs, reducing inefficiency and simplifying steps for capital projects to lower costs and speed up the delivery process to ensure everything arrives on time.
- Responsible for monitoring the project budget, funding, schedule, design, planning activities, and change orders.
- Coordinate work of a multi-disciplinary technical staff across organizational boundaries.
- Supervise and manage construction management professionals to ensure the product complies with the contract for construction, codes, and CCSF standards.
- Communicate and work extensively with the public, private contractors, special interest groups, governmental funding and regulatory agencies, and City and County departments. Serve as a primary contact for all parties involved in the project.
- Conduct onsite visits to job and meeting locations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, engineering, or planning plus eight (8) years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience,
OR
Bachelor’s Degree in another field plus ten (10) years of responsible experience in a field directly related to the project,
OR
Twelve (12) years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to the project,
OR
Valid California registration as a professional engineer or architect, plus four (4) years of project coordination experience for major architectural, engineering or construction projects
Notes:
- One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Understanding of Lean Six Sigma.
- Understanding multiple construction contracting types, such as CM/GC, design-bid-build, and best-value.
- Experience working in large-scale public organizations providing construction or maintenance services.
- Experience leading or coordinating projects with multiple governmental funding sources.

Selection Procedures:

Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant’s experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Note: Failure to complete ALL steps above will be considered as INCOMPLETE and may be disqualified.
