Program Description

The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for students in 1st through 12th grade who live in six low-income and public housing communities in Seattle. Begun in 1991 as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority, the tutoring centers provide youth with a positive learning environment, supportive relationships, and partnership to build academic success. We provide structured tutoring with trained volunteers. We work within the communities we serve, connecting with schools, parents, and other community providers. Position Description

Direct the operations and services for YTP, serving 400+ students from low-income and recent immigrant households, at six sites based in housing communities throughout Seattle. Set direction for and support both school-year and summer programming. Build relationships with students, families, schools, tutors, and other partners. Supervise and support the staff team. Develop and maintain program quality and outcomes of the program. Manage data collection and reporting to funders. Manage the program’s finances and lead the fundraising.

Responsibilities

  • Manage six distinct tutoring program centers and the administrative office. Develop capacity to serve students impacted by poverty and racism and ensure program strength.
  • Develop and manage the annual program budget. Manage the financial operation of the program including purchasing, payment of bills, invoicing of funding sources, and monthly reconciliation.
  • Direct and support a staff team of 10-15 people. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the administrative and leadership staff team of 3-5 people. Support other staff supervisors as needed. Develop and implement new program trainings as well as ensuring opportunities for professional development training.
  • Build relationships with the community leading to increased partnership, new programming, and enhanced opportunities for our youth. Support community relationships and attend meetings to represent YTP in the community. Participate and lead program efforts in collective impact and other community networking activities. Increase the number of youth with access to quality programming.
  • Work with Education Manager to develop and support program structure and use national and state models to consistently improve outcomes and quality of care. Facilitate high quality program implementation that supports state and district priorities for students, and builds educational equity.
  • Communicate agency and program protocols to team and ensure compliance. Ensure quality care, supervision and safety of youth on-site.
  • Identify and secure funding from government and private sources to support or leverage program efforts.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts. Ensure program is in compliance with contract and grant expectations.
  • Diversify donor support for YTP, working with the Development and Communications Coordinator and fund development committee. Develop and implement fund development plans that include cultivation of potential major donors, special events, appeals, newsletters and other strategies.
  • Provide program monitoring and quality improvement. Work with team members to implement an annual cycle of program assessment and improvement, and implement other improvement measures as needed. Routinely visit tutoring centers.
  • Develop and implement a robust data collection system to track and report program performance, outputs, outcomes. Direct the collection and compilation of statistical and narrative reports for submission to funding sources.
  • Write grant requests and respond to Requests for Proposals. Report to funders as scheduled, providing narrative reports, statistical information and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain a workplace that values and supports a culturally and racially diverse team. Strive to hire staff who reflect the cultural diversity of the youth served.
  • Be responsive to emerging program needs, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education or related field, or equivalent in work experience.
  • Three years of experience providing social services or education to children, youth, or young adults who have been impacted by poverty and racism.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services, work effectively in multi-cultural situations, and build anti-racist practices.
  • Willingness to learn and work well within a team environment.
  • Self-directed, efficient and effective in problem solving and managing multiple demands and objectives.
  • Proven ability to communicate with a wide variety of professionals, maintaining and building relationships. Able to speak to large groups.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral skills.
  • Experience and ability managing program finances, including budgeting and tracking expenses.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, understand and use data to support program goals and development.
  • Commitment to maintaining standards of confidentiality.
  • Commitment to maintaining positive work relationships and a respectful, creative, collaborative, and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and database programs.
  • Available at least one evening per week until 8 pm for site visits and substitute duty.

  • Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience managing an after school academic tutoring program
  • Bilingual in a language predominant among program participants: Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Vietnamese, Spanish, or Tigrinya.
  • Significant understanding of the refugee/immigrant experience.
