The Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is seeking a fun and energetic Preschool Assistant to join the Cordova STEAM Preschool Program! Working under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor II, Recreation Coordinator, and under direct supervision of the Preschool Instructor, the Preschool Assistant will assist in the supervision of children ages 3 – 5, prepare supplies, organize the preschool classroom, and encourage positive play and creativity among Cordova STEAM Preschool students.
Work Schedule, part-time seasonal: Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 8:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and Tuesday/Thursday, 8:15 a.m.-4:00 p.m., typically on a school year basis from August through May.
Class Summary
Under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor II and Recreation Coordinator, and direct supervision of the Preschool Teacher, the Preschool Assistant aides the Preschool Teacher with supervision and implementation of curriculum for children ages 3-5 years, ensuring compliance with departmental and program policies and safety procedures; prepares required supplies and materials; answers questions from customers (parent/guardians); interacts with all children enrolled in the program, helping to direct them towards positive play and creativity; assists in supervision of children both in the classroom and at outside play areas while actively working toward maintaining positive student relations and following established procedures for maintaining structure; regularly communicates with the Preschool Teacher, other CRPD frontline staff, parent/guardians and supervisors, addressing questions or concerns about the children involved in the program and program operations.
Essential Functions
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:
- Prepare daily activities; set out materials (e.g., puzzles, paints, various arts and crafts materials and learning tools for free play activities); ensure classroom is organized
- Supervise preschool children both inside the classroom and at outside play areas
- Assist children during snack time
- Assist with clean-up at the end of program activities
- Encourage, facilitate, and maintain positive child behavior through direct supervision, redirection, and modeling
- Assist in communication with parents, children, and the public when indicated by Preschool Teacher
- Assist in maintaining safety, security, cleanliness, and orderliness of classroom and designated outside play areas
- Promote and enforce all safety procedures; render First Aid and CPR (if certified)
- Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings
- Perform related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
- Basic operations, services, and activities of preschool programs
- Modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning and oversight of preschool-aged children, programs, and facilities
- Basic rules and equipment used in preschool programming and activities
- Safety principles, practices, precautions, and procedures pertaining to activities involving children ages 3-5
- Basic office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and basic software applications such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
Ability to:
- Understand all Cordova STEAM Preschool operations and functions; observe, promote and enforce all safety rules, regulations and procedures as indicated
- Effectively respond to emergency situations in a calm and professional manner; administer First Aid and CPR when necessary (once certified)
- Provide robust internal and external customer service at an exceptionally high level to both preschool children and their parent/guardian
- Provide instructions, relay processes and articulate procedures to preschool children, parent/guardians, and CRPD frontline staff
- Manage time and resources; organize and prioritize workloads
- Assist in a variety of preschool-centric activities and apply knowledge to a daily preschool setting
- Actively address and diffuse disruptive behavior among children involved in preschool programming
- Complete mandatory reports; keep accurate records
- Be involved in sensitive discussions, meetings and conferences with parent/guardians when indicated by Preschool Teacher and/or supervisor
- Gather, analyze, and report information to Preschool Teacher and/or supervisor
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Effectively communicate and work closely with individuals of diverse backgrounds, various ages, demographics, and departments
Education and Experience Guidelines – Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to a high school diploma or general educational development (GED) diploma. Previous experience working in a role supervising children and communicating with parents is preferred.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification in First Aid and CPR within three (3) months of employment.

Sick Leave: All part-time and seasonal employees will be issued twenty-four (24) hours of sick leave upon their date of hire and reinstated every one year anniversary to be available for the following twelve months not to exceed a 24 hour cap. Sick leave may not be used until after 90 days of the original hire date.
