Job Summary
Swim Instructors teach in-water group and semi-private lessons to children 18 months through 14 years old. Classes are held primarily in the evening.

General Duties

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with curriculum.
  • Able to build and maintain positive relationships with participants and parents, providing daily constructive feedback.
  • Tracks program attendance and progress.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Organizes and maintains equipment, reports all damaged equipment to supervisor.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, positive and family friendly program atmosphere.
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents, participants and other staff members.
  • Assist facility staff to ensure all facility, Town of Vernon and Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedure are followed.


  • Minimum 15 years of age.
  • Previous experience instructing swim lessons.
  • Posses American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or obtain certification prior to the start of employment.
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Reliable transportation required.

Physical and mental effort and Work Conditions

  • Must be in good physical conditions.
  • Able to lift objects in excess of 30 pounds.
  • Able to concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Able to sit, stand and swim for extended periods of time.
  • Able to attend to tasks for 60 minutes.
  • Able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination.
  • Able to see objects closely and far away.
  • Able to hear normal sounds with background noise.
  • Possible exposure to blood, body tissues or fluids.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions.
