SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The City of San Marcos is looking to fill various positions within the Aquatics Division. As a qualified Aquatics Instructor with the San Marcos Aquatics Division, you will be able to showcase your talents and abilities to help better serve the aquatics community.
An Aquatics Instructor takes ownership of their responsibilities, can work and communicate effectively as part of a team and is someone that does not shy away from being a leader. The individual will work as a cohesive unit with other staff members during regular shifts, trainings, and emergencies.
Regular Part Time Employee: Regular employees are able to work year-round during aquatics programming needs and can work up to 20 hours per week. September – May availability must reflect work hour availability during evenings (3pm-9pm) and weekends. Employees whose availability changes to not include the above time frame will be separated from employment with the ability to return.
Shifts: Monday through Thursday from 4:30pm to 7:30pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
All part time employees are limited to no more than 999 hours per fiscal year.
Steps to become an Water Safety Instructor for San Marcos Aquatics Division:
- Submit a complete application.
- Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview and In-water skills assessment that will be conducted in one of the City’s aquatics facilities.
- Successfully pass a background check, drug screening, and physical prior to starting work.
NOTE: The City of San Marcos is committed to a drug and alcohol free workplace. A medical examination, along with a DRUG SCREEN will be conducted following a conditional offer of employment.

*Candidate must attend one weekend for each certification

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Duties of San Marcos Aquatics Instructors typically include:
- Teach swim lessons according to American Red Cross standards
- Interact with parents regarding the progress of participant
- Enforce required safety rules and regulations
- Prevent persons from entering into distressing and dangerous situations
- Rescue persons in distress and administer first aid and emergency care
- Ensure guests are safely participating in all aquatics activities
- Answer inquiries from the public and provide information about city programs
- Assist in overall maintenance and operations of the facility
- Assist in conducting special events and department programming as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
To be a San Marcos Aquatics Instructors you must meet the following qualifications:
- Be a minimum 16 years of age at time of hire
- Lifeguarding certification
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Water Safety Instructor certification
- First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, recommended
- Previous swim team, water polo team, or pool experience not required
You do not have to be certified to complete an application, but you must be certified by the time of hire and provide proof of certification.

This is a part time non-benefited position, however effective 07/01/2015 part time employees will receive 1 hour of sick leave accrual per 30 hours worked. Employees in this category are eligible use up to 27 hours per year and are able to carry over up to 54 sick leave hours per year.
