Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and safety of Santa Rosa Lake State Park. Ensuring the park meets the Department, Division, Park policy, goals, and standards. This position is responsible for buildings, equipment, tool maintenance, and facility maintenance. This position contributes to the agency by presenting a safe park setting, grounds, and facilities. This position also assisst visitors with their questions about the park.

How does it get done?

Maintaining park facilities and equipment up to Division standards with limited financial and staff resources. This requires the ability to recognize items that need attention, prioritize these needs, and allocate the available resources needed, while conserving these resources for the other items that need attention. The incumbent in this position must have knowledge and experience in general construction, plumbing, automotive repair/maintenance, facilities and equipment maintenance, time management, staff management, good communication skills and the ability to multi-task. The incumbent in this position requires the ability to communicate with the general public in order to gain public compliance with state park rules/regulations and policies for the safety and enjoyment of others, as well as the preservation of the park’s natural and cultural resources.

Services and facilities care provided for all park visitors, internal staff, and protection of resources for the State of New Mexico.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding and respect for outdoor recreation and education. The candidate should have a strong background in facilities and grounds maintenance, including carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, masonry, and similar skills. The ideal candidate would have an associate’s degree from a technical school with coursework related to carpentry, plumbing, masonry, construction, or landscaping.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience in parks, monuments, museums, interpretive/educational ranger, field archaeologist and/or ruins preservationist at a historic site. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

The position is labor intensive to include: digging, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as standingfor long periods of time. The position requires the use of various hand and power tools, as well as operatingvehicles and heavy equipment. One may be required to work in adverse weather conditions, extreme coldand heat for extended periods of time. Shift work may be required on holidays or during park events.Emergency maintenance situations may also arise requiring extended hours of work. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is also required. Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location. Extensive travel in region wide area. Weekend/holiday work required.
