The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs. The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County.

The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section. The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.

The Park/General Maintenance Worker III position is at the Polk Street Maintenance Facility in Hyattsville, Maryland. This role encompasses various responsibilities within park maintenance, ranging from trash management to landscape care, and from playground upkeep to facility maintenance.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Efficiently and safely operate a variety of heavy machinery and equipment. This includes tractors with mowing attachments for large-scale turf maintenance, packer trucks for comprehensive waste management, front-end loaders for material transport and grading tasks, and chippers for tree limb removal and arbor care.
  • Maintain park areas’ cleanliness and aesthetic appeal by ensuring comprehensive waste removal. Responsibilities include operating packer trucks to lift and empty large trash cans and barrels, manually picking up litter from the ground, and providing regular trash collection schedules. Work to minimize the impact of waste on the park environment and visitor experience.
  • Conduct routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repair tasks for playground areas. Load, transport, and evenly distribute playground chips to maintain safe and enjoyable play surfaces. Regularly inspect playground equipment for potential safety hazards, performing necessary repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Employ various horticultural techniques to maintain and enhance the park’s landscapes. This includes operating chippers to clear and remove fallen tree limbs and executing a range of turf care tasks such as mowing, aerating, and fertilizing to promote healthy growth and an attractive appearance.
  • Contribute to the safety and functionality of the park by installing and repairing fencing and bollard poles. Utilize various tools and techniques while adhering to safety guidelines to ensure durable and practical installations.
  • Perform specialized maintenance tasks to keep ballfields in optimal condition. Use tractors with attachments to drag dirt infields, fill in low spots, and create a level and smooth playing surfaces for various recreational activities.
  • Undertake regular cleaning and maintenance tasks in park buildings and facilities, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming for visitors. Duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and performing minor repairs as required.
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills by directing small maintenance crews. Coordinate tasks, ensure team productivity, and maintain a safe and efficient work environment. Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff members as required.
  • Execute prompt and effective snow removal strategies during winter, ensuring park paths, parking lots, and facilities remain accessible and safe. Respond rapidly to storm damage by clearing debris, fallen branches, and other hazards, working to restore the park to a safe and usable condition as quickly as possible.
  • Strictly adhere to all workplace safety guidelines and procedures. Monitor the work environment to identify potential hazards, take corrective action as required, and contribute to maintaining a culture of safety among all staff members.
  • Conduct regular checks of park facilities and equipment, identifying and reporting maintenance needs or safety hazards. Perform preventative maintenance tasks to prolong the life of park assets and minimize downtime.
  • Represent the park positively by assisting and interacting with park visitors in a friendly and professional manner. Provide information, directions, or assistance as needed, and contribute to a positive visitor experience.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school graduate or GED, and four years of progressively responsible experience in grounds keeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance; and demonstrated ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports; or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Pass Commission medical examination.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:

a. Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.

b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.

c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
