Position Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering (KIE) has an opening for a dynamic Naval Architect Intern in our growing Construction Engineering Services Group. You will be part of our rapidly growing Infrastructure Design Department, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail, marine, and materials disciplines. KIE is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.

Our Construction Engineering Services (CES) group consists of innovative design engineers whose expertise in designing and building temporary works adds value and ensures success of Kiewit’s projects. Additionally, CES provides on-site engineering and coordination support, leading and collaborating with Kiewit’s construction teams.

District Overview

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering’s Design-Build team is driving clients to turn to Kiewit during all stages of design-build projects. Through our integrated design and construction approach, our multi-disciplinary team works together to improve schedule, control costs, and minimize risk. Our construction-focused engineers work collaboratively with our estimators and builders to design solutions that are innovative, constructible, and designed with a focus on safety. Clients benefit from the proven processes and tools used by Kiewit to minimize project risk. We are an in-house resource that supports projects throughout the company. Location

This internship could be based out of Lone Tree, CO or Cranford, NJ.

Responsibilities

  • Produce simple hull structural design calculations
  • Review and check hull structural design calculations
  • Perform analysis using structural engineering software
  • Produce simple hull stability calculations
  • Create hull models for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis in Moses or Maxsurf software

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Naval Architecture and/or Marine Engineering
  • Be available for full-time work during the 2023 summer
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred
  • Completed Naval Architecture courses which include fundamentals of vessel stability, dynamics, resistance, and hull structural concepts
  • Completed a fluid mechanics course with linear wave theory concepts
  • Completed a strength of materials course with statics and dynamics application preferred
  • Should be comfortable with the use of basic spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
  • Experience with engineering and CAD software preferred, especially hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis (Maxsurf) and finite element analysis (RISA)
  • Strong work ethic – willing to do what it takes to get the job done
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Be willing to fully participate in job assignments at the job site, district office or department to which the intern is assigned

• Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
• Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.

Base Compensation: $15.00/hr – $23.00/hr
(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
