Summary

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) is at the forefront of research in sustainability, water quality, intelligent cities, and next-generation transportation. Our world-class faculty and students are working in areas such as addressing water issues in Michigan, modernizing construction work with robotics, and developing more sustainable concrete.

The CEE Mktg Communications Specialist will find, tell and maximize these stories, and spread the messages of the transformative work happening in the department to help recruit students, faculty and resources. You will be responsible for coordinating, developing and maintaining a variety of communications and marketing platforms and products, including multimedia stories, websites, social media, newsletters, events, podcasts and print products. You will work in collaboration with department and College staff, faculty and other marketing and communications professionals to craft and disseminate the strategic goals of the department.

The CEE Mktg Communications Specialist is independently responsible for any departmental projects related to marketing and communications. This includes informing and educating faculty, staff, students, alumni and the general public outside the U-M CEE Community through publications, websites, social media and mass communication. You will assist the Dept. Chair and Unit Administrator in determining marketing and promotional needs. You will manage student temp employees who assist with writing, social media posts, and/or graphic design as delegated.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities for this position include:

Plan and coordinate both printed and digital marketing communications and materials, internal and external publications, videos, podcasts, social media, etc.

Identify appropriate delivery methods, including targeted email, printed documents, web articles, and web pages

Design, develop and implement communications, based on organizational and user needs

On-going responsibility for research, writing, editing and producing newsletters (print and digital versions) for the department, with the occasional video or donation solicitation

Ensure that marketing materials are accurate, consistent in branding with the College of Engineering and issued on a timely basis

Solicit and evaluate feedback and metrics regarding communications and make improvements continuously

Develop and write print publications (i.e., newsletters, brochures, manuals, etc.) as well as electronic products (website articles, e-newsletters, websites, social media posts, etc.) including all layouts

Coordinate and develop communications for large projects, multiple projects and projects with high visibility, such as recruiting materials, student group information and the department website

Develop internal communications via electronic platforms (Salesforce Marketing Cloud), including routine updates as well as crisis communications messages

Support the implementation of marketing strategies, monitoring the analytics and reporting on strategy performance

Work closely with faculty and students to write research articles, create videos, record podcasts, showcase curriculum and promote successes within the department, especially related to our research, teaching, Strategic Directions and DEI initiatives

Collaborate with marketing staff from the College of Engineering to facilitate the creation of research stories, videos and promotional materials

Regularly attend and actively participate with the CoE Communicators group and coordinate with other marketing professionals around the College

Support research proposal submissions with graphics, flyers and professional presentation of large proposals (occasionally)

Support the department with presentation templates, recommendations, critiques, and enhancements

Revise and update student recruiting materials (printed and digital) to positively promote our department

Work with external vendors on print projects, videography and graphic design (occasionally)

Manage Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts with consistent updates regarding department news and events, alumni connections, video links, etc.; schedule items in advance when possible

Attend and assist with events and webinars, promotion, advertising, photography, videography, and logistics, collaborating with CEE Admin Team; events may be off-site (all local) and will include some evenings and weekends

Required Qualifications*

The successful candidate must:

Hold a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or a related field

Have 3+ years of directly related experience working with publishing (professional writing or marketing communications), graphic design, marketing and web design

Possess excellent communication skills, including listening and the ability to follow directions, grammar, spelling, and editing skills; must be able to write clear, concise news articles based on interviews and technical research regarding various topics

Be capable of performing with a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy

Have demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as work independently with minimal supervision

Have demonstrated ability to work in a positive manner with diverse populations of students, staff, faculty and alumni

Possess a high level of proficiency with information technology applications including MS-Office and Google Workspace (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing, and slideshows), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photo-shop, Illustrator, Premiere) and web management tools (WordPress, HTML/CSS); must have a high level of proficiency using InDesign and may be required to bring samples of work to an interview

Be proficient with electronic mail platforms such as Salesforce/Marketing Cloud to create newsletters and publications

Have the ability to schedule, conduct and edit podcasts and edit audio and video for webinars

Have knowledge of interpreting marketing data and web analytics

Be a self-starter and demonstrate initiative

Possess excellent organizational skills and creativity

Have demonstrated a high level of critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills

Be able to set priorities, handle multiple assignments and negotiate deadlines all while being customer-service oriented

Learn quickly and stay calm in the face of concurrent tasks with competing deadlines

Display excellent judgment while operating in a flexible and highly professional manner

Work Locations

This position is Monday – Friday from 8am to 5pm with occasional evenings or weekends, such as for events. CEE operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. The role will be classified as a FLEX position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus an average of 3 days per week during the academic year and 2 days per week from mid-May to mid-August.
