Member of Technical Staff II – VMware Workload Mobility – Opportunity for Working Remotely

We need someone who can collaborate with architects and technical leads to develop system software according to the design and architecture specifications, to deliver workload mobility enhancements for the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) increasing adoption of the Hybrid Cloud by enabling mobility across clouds.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 3-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within your first 3 months

  • You will be expected to learn about vSphere and gain a good understanding of the major subsystems including vCenter, ESX, vSAN. You will learn about mobility and how this flagship capability is utilized in the SDDC.
  • You will be expected to start diving into the source base and get familiar with the major components for mobility.
  • You will setup your development, test environments and tools necessary to access bugs filed against the mobility team and shadow experienced engineers in developing, testing features and triaging, resolving bugs. You will submit small code changes.

Within your first 3 – 6 months

  • You will be expected to implement low to medium complexity enhancements that adheres to design documents provided, with close guidance from your team lead.
  • You will start bug watch rotation and are able to triage bugs and provide resolution with guidance.
  • You will be proficient with our test pipeline and triage incoming failures and can resolve test bugs with guidance.
  • You will engage in our public cloud on call rotation to address issues encountered with mobility.

After 6 months

  • You will demonstrate a higher level of independence for all tasks listed above with sufficient velocity and of high quality.
  • You will engage in technical discussions and are able to provide input.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Implement novel operating system techniques to provide cutting edge mobility features.
  • Full stack development that includes REST APIs to kernel level programming.
  • Work on Management, Control and Data Plane improvements.
  • Participate in our on-call rotation, providing operational support to our platform.
  • Utilize test-driven development and owning code quality.
  • Improve and maintain CI pipelines for your components.
  • Perform code reviews and enforce coding guidelines.
  • Utilize tools to measure, analyze and tune performance and scalability.
  • Develop flexible, reusable code that can be shared in multiple components across several operating systems/hypervisors.
  • Interact with architects and technical leads.
  • Respond to customer issues.
  • Interact with our customer support organization and the release team.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This position reports to Terry Tinnakul, Director of the Application Quality of Service (AppQoS) organization that owns vSphere’s flag-ship capabilities including vMotion and DRS. Terry is an experienced kernel programmer, turned manager that has led diverse teams in his career including O.S. Kernel development, Cloud Infrastructure development, and Site Reliability Engineers. The team consists of highly competent engineers from junior programmers to senior leads with deep industry experience. Terry foster’s a collaborative environment where engineers are highly valued for not only their technical competency but also how they help others succeed.

For US based candidates, the annual pay range (OTE for commissioned roles; Salary for other roles) for this position is: $84,000 – $190,000. The actual offer will be based on the role, location, and individual candidate experience. Bonus, commission, and/or equity may be eligible for this position.
