2023 ODNR Seasonal Lifeguard – Hocking Hills State Park

ODNR owns and manages state parks, state forests, state nature preserves and wildlife areas. We license all hunting, fishing and watercraft; oversee and permit all mineral extraction, monitor dam safety, manage water resources and serve as the second largest Law Enforcement presence in the State of Ohio.

This is a seasonal (unclassified) position for the Division of Parks & Watercraft, headquartered at Hocking Hills State Park, assigned to Hocking county. These positions are utilized during the division’s typical busiest season which runs from May through September.

Position Description:

Rescues swimmers in distress (e.g., enters water to aid potential drowning victims; uses rescue equipment (e.g., rescue tube, rescue board; canoe) to tow/pull swimmer to safety): performs emergency first aid (e.g., administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation; holds compress to bleeding area; covers victim).

Guards designated swimming area against drownings & related accidents; advises public of pertinent provisions of Ohio Revised Code & Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Parks & Watercraft Division rules & regulations; requests public’s compliance with laws, rules & regulations; summons law enforcement for enforcement of rules & regulations; attends training sessions.

Completes incident report forms; inspects safety equipment for any needed repairs; maintains swimming area (e.g., picks up litter, empties trash containers, checks restrooms, vending machines, mows grass, paints surfaces); keeps supervisor well informed of swimming area maintenance needs (cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs).

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to weather; exposed to potentially hostile general public; exposed to danger in performing water rescue; works weekends, evenings & rotating shifts

Qualifications
American Red Cross lifeguard training certificate or American Red Cross lifeguard training certificate 2, YMCA – National YMCA lifeguard certificate, Boy Scouts Of America – BSA lifeguard certificate or BSA aquatic instructor certificate, Ellis & Associates – national pool & watermark lifeguard training certificate, or nationally recognized equivalent; CPR (i.e., cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) certificate.
