Description

Seattle Humane is looking for a creative, results- and relationship-driven, motivated fundraising professional to join our productive, collaborative Advancement team as our next Major Gifts Officer (MGO). The Development team raises approximately $10 million annually, with as-yet untapped opportunity to do even more on behalf of the animals in our care.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

Full-time position. Salary range $90,000-$100,000, consummate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Serve as a primary contact and lead staff solicitor in presenting the Seattle Humane Society message to prospective and current donors at the $1,000+ level. Work with CEO, senior leadership, staff and board volunteers to enhance Seattle Humane Society’s relationships with current and prospective donors to increase both the number of major gifts and total dollars raised annually in support of Seattle Humane Society. Develop and lead Seattle Humane Society’s fundraising initiatives that will surpass industry norms in new donor acquisition, retention, and dollars raised annually at the $1,000 or more level of giving. The major gifts officer will be expected to manage a portfolio to raise both unrestricted and restricted gifts.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of annual written strategies and cultivation plans for major donors and prospects ($1,000+ annual gifts) and grants/sponsorships from individuals and foundations (family foundations and donor-advised funds) annually.

CORE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a donor-centered comprehensive fundraising plan for donors and prospects that will include extensive one-on-one contact, tailored communications, prospect research, cultivation, stewardship, donor relations and solicitation and donor engagement events. Manage a personal portfolio of donors/prospects and provide strategy/guidance to donors/prospects managed by other staff. Coordinate major donor and family foundation cultivation/identification plans/activities with senior management, board volunteers and other staff.
  • Develop a plan of action for individual board member identification of 3-5 donor prospects annually and support resulting cultivation ask plans.
  • Oversee messaging of all renewal, special mailings, and acknowledgement correspondence to donors/prospects in this program in the $500 or more category.
  • Create customized case for giving for each foundation and individual identified as a high priority prospect. Provide necessary research and preparation of funding proposals to corporations, foundations and associations. Provide necessary reports to fulfill received grant requirements.
  • Attend local/regional fundraisers and participate in targeted organizations that can be sources of successful fundraising ideas and donor prospects for Seattle Humane Society.
  • Track and report on trends/issues relating to major donor and grant solicitation programs in general and not-for-profit sectors most closely related to Seattle Humane Society donors and prospects.
  • Serve as interim staff liaison for the Donor Development Committee, Planned Giving Council and Seattle Humane Society Business Council. Assist with strategic planning issues and growth plans.
  • Provide Pawprints Planned Giving Society members (individuals including Seattle Humane Society in their will) with stewardship and care activities.
  • Ensure that donor solicitation practices conform to federal, state and Seattle Humane Society policies.
  • Be flexible to travel regionally as necessary to build donor relationships and increase dollars raised.
  • Provide training to staff, volunteers, and board as necessary.
  • Represent the organization at events and speaking opportunities as needed (major donor functions, receptions, community events, etc.).
  • Develop revenue goals and expense budget, and track those activities monthly. Perform analysis of program performance. Monitor and help develop Major Gifts budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree and 6 years professional fundraising experience with significant responsibility for achieving fundraising goals.
  • Preferred: A minimum of 4 years experience in a major donor program role with direct fundraising responsibilities annually of $1 million or more for each of the last four years. Capital campaign participation and leadership strongly preferred. CFRE and knowledge of Raiser’s Edge including query and reporting capabilities preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a team-oriented setting.
  • Commitment to providing quality service and deep commitment to the mission a must.
  • Demonstrated experience in major gifts, donor cultivation, case for giving development, and presentation to corporations, foundations, and associations necessary. Experience managing, motivating and training volunteers and staff to carry out major donor activities and growing dollars received annually. Demonstrated success in grant research/proposal writing. Working knowledge of annual support through direct marketing. Working knowledge of planned giving preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to organize and prioritize multiple long and short-term projects with positive outcomes.
  • Personal knowledge and professional relationships with local, regional and/or national philanthropic fundraising decision makers desired.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office strongly desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. May have limited animal handling which presents the potential of animal bites, exposure to zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to people), animal dander and noise.

Equipment Use: Continuous use of computer, printer, fax, adding and copy machine, and multi-line telephone.

Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours a week. Some evening and/or weekend hours required.

LOCATION

Must be based in the greater Seattle area. Reimbursement for relocation expenses not available.
