Why does the job exist?
This position will ensure proper operation of laboratory systems, electrical systems, and chilled water systems, air handling systems and refrigeration units of the New Mexico Scientific Laboratory Building. This position will perform the maintenance of electrical pumps and motors, inspect facility systems and determine proper operations or need for repairs. This position will use manual and power tools. This position will maintain courteous and professional working relationships with staff of all agencies occupying the building and contractors.
How does it get done?
Quarterly maintenance on all motors, air handling units exhaust fans, chilled water and hot water systems. This position requires daily inspection of all equipment, review of the building automation systems and effluent disinfection. This position will aid in the oversight and review of work performed by contractors. This position will be responsible for obtaining price quotes, reviewing contracts, filling out the proper documentation and forms to obtain necessary commodities for building operations.
Who are the customers?
All personnel in the New Mexico Scientific Laboratory building; Scientific Laboratory Division, Veterinary Diagnostic Servies, and Office of the Medical Investigator.
Ideal Candidate
High School diploma or GED and four (4) years construction experience to include familiarity with application of building codes and regulations; fundamental understanding and application of electrical, plumbing, ventilation, HVAC, maintenance and/or custodial operations, troubleshooting equipment, hot water boilers and steam boiler systems.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience in general buildings and grounds maintenance, custodial duties, construction or appliance repair.
Employment Requirements
Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42CFR73, Possession, Use, and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins. Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, able to differentiate colors, use of sterile techniques, and good manual dexterity. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.
This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting supporting a fully functional laboratory. There is extensive personal computer and phone usage, and repetitive trunk/arm/hand and neck movements. The fully functional laboratory contains biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs. Extended standing, walking, stooping and use of power tools/equipment. Must work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
