Description of Work:
Parks is looking for a self motivated and team orientated Maintenance/Construction Technician to provide supervisory and technical work at the Park. Position participates in the maintenance, repair and minor renovation work to buildings, equipment, and utility systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain grounds, facilities and equipment and assist park rangers or additional maintenance staff with the maintenance requirements of state parks and state recreation areas.
- Basic custodial responsibilities, boundary line clearing and maintenance, trail construction and maintenance, trash collection, mowing and trimming, prescribed burn assistance, and basic auto mechanics, HVAC, carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs and complete equipment maintenance.
- Preventative maintenance on all tools, equipment, and facilities.
- Performs administrative functions – purchases in accordance with state purchasing policies, record keeping, recording work hours, performance, and basic operational forms, interview, select, recommend for hire, and supervise seasonal employees & permanent maintenance positions.
Job Requirements:
- Some weekend and holiday work is required.
- Must be available to work after hours and weekend hours when necessary and available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.
- Considered “Essential/Mandatory Staff” and required to work on adverse weather days, during Park emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver’s license within 30 days of employment. Must meet DOA Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
- Must be able bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any tie of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.
- Physical strength to move relatively heavy objects (up to 90 pounds) and to work at heavy manual tasks for considerable periods of time.
- Coordinate supervision of both skilled and unskilled workers, and work with various contractors and vendors.
Within 365 days of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain :
- A valid Emergency Medical Responder Certification.
- A valid CPR Certification.
- Wild Land Fire Suppression Training
- Division Sponsored Chainsaw Training
Within 24 months of hire, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:

Park Information:
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is a collective of nine access areas scattered around the shoreline of this undeveloped, 14,000-acre reservoir. More than 1,000 campsites among five of the access areas offer a range of outdoor experience from RV hookups to primitive tent camping and group camps. There are seven swim beaches in the recreation area and a number of boating ramps, with some swim areas and ramps reserved for campers. Nearly 14 miles of hiking trails wind across the hilly lakeshore, with most of them offering easy, brief hikes perfect for family outings. Spotting bald eagles and osprey is just one of many opportunities to view wildlife, and the lake’s ecology is further explored in the visitor center exhibit hall.
