Lithography Systems Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Lithography Systems Engineer to join the team.

We are currently seeking a skilled Lithography Systems Engineer to provide comprehensive technical and operational support at our state-of-the-art EUV photolithography materials research center.

What You Will Do:

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain various equipment and systems including EUV lithography exposure systems, synchrotron beamline instrumentation, semiconductor processing equipment, vacuum systems, optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, and ellipsometers.
  • Execute detailed experiments, ensuring accuracy and precision.
  • Analyze data, identify trends, and make informed, data-driven decisions.
  • Proficiently communicate technical/scientific concepts, processes, and methods to a diverse audience.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to our global scientific user community.
  • Support users in achieving scientific objectives and interpreting experimental data, with the guidance of Scientific Staff.
  • Conduct training on relevant instrumentation, concepts, processes, and methods.
  • Identify and communicate any anomalies in experimental data or instrument behavior.
  • Continually improve processes and techniques to enhance efficiency and quality while reducing waste and cost.
  • Monitor data related to equipment and systems performance.
  • Maintain clean, organized workspaces and labs.
  • Foster a positive, productive work environment through collaborative interactions with team members and management.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent knowledge in a field closely related to the program.
  • Proficiency in operating scientific/technical instrumentation and process-oriented tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with proficiency in data organization and analysis (using Excel, MATLAB, or equivalent).
  • Robust written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven dependability, punctuality, and strong work ethic.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and clean working habits.
  • Passion for science and technology.
  • Strong technical and personal references.
  • Familiarity with Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems, as well as Word and Excel.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in operating semiconductor processing equipment, e.g., spin coaters, developers, bake plates, ellipsometers.
  • Familiarity with operating an analytical Scanning Electron Microscope, and inspecting patterned wafers.
  • Practical knowledge of photolithography exposure systems.
  • Understanding of college level optics concepts – diffraction gratings, zone plates, lenses, coatings, diffraction, interference, imaging equation.
  • Experience with amateur photography concepts: numerical aperture, magnification, depth of field, depth of focus, f#, aperture stops, enlarging, development, sensitivity, etc.
  • Prior experience in a darkroom photography lab would be a plus.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $78,732-98,460 per year, which fits within the full salary range of $78,732-$132,912 per year for the N50.1 job code. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
