GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs difficult technical work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of the electric utility transmission and distribution system and a variety of other electrical services and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of an Electric Line Crew Leader.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Performs work on energized electrical lines and equipment at heights up to 100 feet.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Installing, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground power transmission and distribution lines and related facilities; operating equipment. Performs work on lines and equipment energized at or below 35,000 volts. Operates bucket trucks, line trucks, trenchers, backhoes, etc. Installs electric primary and secondary service lines both overhead and underground; installs transmission and distribution poles; installs crossarms, switches, insulators, lightning arrestors, etc.; installs and connects overhead and underground transformers; connects single-phase transformers into three-phase banks; reinstalls lines that have pulled loose from houses. Maintains street lights, area lights, flood lights, and traffic lights. Keeps trucks stocked with materials and tools. Performs landscaping duties. Troubleshoots power outages and restores of power as safely and efficiently as possible to minimize outage time; repairs electric system in widespread outage situations and restores power. Locates underground cables; locates faulted sections of secondary and primary conductors and makes repairs. Replaces bad transformers, damaged poles, switches, lightning arresters, fuses, and connectors. Climbs wooden poles as required. Installs work zone protective devices such as warning signs, flags, cones, etc.; serves as a flagman in work zones to direct traffic safely through the zone. Performs routine substation inspections and assists with the maintenance of substation equipment. Works outside normal hours in emergencies and performs on-call duties. Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of electric line construction and maintenance and the hazards encountered; general knowledge of materials, equipment and tools used in electric utility work; ability to follow oral directions; ability to observe safety rules and regulations; ability to perform manual labor; strength to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to climb poles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in electric line construction and maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
CPR and basic first aid certification required.
