DESCRIPTION
The City of Palmdale is looking for Lifeguards to work at one of our many aquatics facilities. Lifeguard positions are ideal for those seeking an energetic work environment and a rewarding level of responsibility working with the public.
Required certifications include possession of CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and possession of Lifeguard Training Certificate.

Lifeguard I
Provide for the safety of patrons using the pool, aid patrons in danger, and perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Senior Lifeguard.
Lifeguard II
Provide for the safety of patrons using the pool, aid patrons in danger, teach swimming lessons, and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prevent accidents by enforcing policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct of patrons at the swimming pool; keep attentive lookout for accidents in the water or on a diving board or swimming pool deck; warn people against dangerous practices regarding pool use.
• Enter the water to rescue patrons in distress; administer CPR and first aid; assist with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or about the swimming pool as required; conduct water safety and lifesaving instruction classes.
• Ensure visitor safety in the water and on the pool deck.
• Explain and maintain pool safety rules.
• Rescue distressed swimmers.
• Administer CPR and First Aid.
• Assist in routine pool maintenance and cleaning.
• Teach swim lessons.
• Conduct, oversee, and teach competitive and non-competitive recreational swim activities.
• Attend trainings to receive the necessary information to conduct such activities.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING / LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities qualifies. A typical way to obtain the necessary knowledge and skills would be:
Lifeguard I
• Aquatic Program experience.
• Participation in formal or informal education courses.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATES:
• Possession of CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
• Possession of Lifeguard Training Certificate.
• Emergency Response or EMSA Title 22
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be seventeen 17 years of age by July 1, 2024.
• CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Lifeguard II
• High school graduate.
• Two years of Lifeguard experience.
• Swimming instructor.
• Educational development produces the ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATES:
• Possession of CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
• Possession of Lifeguard Training Certificate.
• Emergency Response or EMSA Title 22
• Current Water Safety Instructor Certificate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Rescue methods and first aid as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding area.
• Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of public swimming pools.
Lifeguard I
Ability to:
• Ability to instruct swim lessons.
• Ability to rescue distressed swimmers and provide CPR/First Aid.
• Ability to supervise pool visitors and maintain a safe environment.
• Ability to read, understand, and deliver written or oral directions.
• Ability to communicate policies to the general public.
• Ability to represent the City in a positive, appropriate manner.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment.
• Ability to follow procedures outlined by supervisor.
• Ability to work as a team member with the parks and recreation department.
• Must be 17 years of age by July 1, 2024.
• Must be able to swim.
• Ability to administer First Aid and CPR as required.
• Supervise the conduct of pool patrons and tactfully maintain order.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Lifeguard II
In addition to the requirements for Lifeguard I:
Ability to:
• Evaluate where in the swim program a swimmer will be placed
• Implement the established swim lesson program curriculum and scope

OVERTIME COMPENSATION: Compensatory time is accrued at time-and-a-half for eligible employees for time physically worked in excess of the regular forty (40) hour work week.
MILEAGE PAY: Any employee may be reimbursed for work related mileage at 54 cents per mile when assigned to use their private vehicle on City business.
SOCIAL SECURITY: The City does not participate in Social Security, and does not deduct Social Security payments from any employee’s salary. The City does deduct 1.45% of salary for Medicare & makes a 1.45% matching contribution.
