Purpose of Position:
To protect the life and property of individuals on the college’s campuses and college activities off campus through personal action and supervision of subordinates. To protect college property and provide a safe college environment by enforcement of applicable laws, regulations, and policies. To support the established vision and mission of the college through personal action and supervision of subordinate personnel. Properly utilize resources and to use sound judgment in the application and interpretation of laws, regulations, and policies. Work effectively with personnel from other law enforcement agencies, Commonwealth’s Attorneys and their staff, Court personnel and other individuals from local, state and federal agencies. Supervise the daily activities of subordinate police officers, security officers, and work-study students. Assist the Chief of Police in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs. Support the Chief of Police as directed.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position begins at $55,000.00 per year, however, actual starting salary will commensurate with education and/or experience.The position is classified staff and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies. Special Assignments

KSA’s/Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing using the English language.
  • Must be able to plan, organize, and direct enforcement activities to achieve the goals and objectives of the college.
  • Must possess a general knowledge of statute enforcement, crisis management, first line supervisions, investigative processes, crime prevention and principles of community policing.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of law enforcement and security concepts, principals, procedures, and techniques.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of customer service practice and principles.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency as defined by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and department policies and procedures with assigned agency firearms and weapons.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency to safely operate agency vehicles and other equipment.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to give oral and written instructions and to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to gather information and write factual reports.
  • Must be willing to travel between multiple campus locations (including Middletown, Fauquier, and Luray) and work various shifts.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience.
  • Must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer in Virginia or have been certified as a law enforcement officer and be able to obtain law enforcement certification within the time prescribed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
  • Must not have been terminated from any law enforcement agency for an act of moral turpitude, excessive or unnecessary use of force, domestic assault & battery, lying or falsifying records, or resigning prior to the completion of a formal internal affairs investigation.
  • Must not be named or pending being named on a Giglio or Brady list by any prosecutor’s office in the United States of America.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license recognized by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must possess current CPR / AED /First Aid Certification or be willing to obtain certification at the direction of the department.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • DCJS General Instructor and/or specialty certifications are preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience and/or training preferred.
  • Proven academic excellence and subject matter knowledge, which may be evidenced by training, experience, and/or an associate degree.
